TOKYO — A Japanese legislative proposal allowing anyone who signs a contract to appear in “pornographic productions” to void that contract at any time for any reason has been passed into law.

As XBIZ has reported, a legislative debate in recent weeks about lowering the age of legal majority in Japan quickly devolved into a sensationalist campaign about adult performers aged 18-19; the age-majority bill was passed unanimously in a plenary session of the House of Representatives in late May. 

As the bill passed into law on Wednesday, Japanese newspaper The Mainichi described it as “marking a step in efforts to end abuses of those involved in the industry in Japan.”

The bill “allows people who agree to appear in pornographic content to terminate their contracts at any time before the film’s public release without conditions, as well as up to a year afterward,” reported The Mainchi. “However, as a special measure, a review period of up to two years after a film’s release will apply for the first two years after the law’s promulgation. If the contract is terminated, video vendors are obliged to recover the products and delete the footage, and cannot claim compensation from the performers.”

The bill was passed at a House of Councillors plenary session and mandates that “a month must pass between the signing of a contract and the filming of the video, and four months between the filming of the video and its public release,” noted the newspaper. “This gives enough time for those who appear in them to reconsider whether they still want to make the film and release it. Producers must additionally provide a written explanation to performers describing the nature of the content, including specific sexual acts required during filming, and the fact that they may be identifiable.”

Punishment for violating the new law includes hefty fines and a prison term of up to three years.

The Mainchi notes “the definition of pornography as ‘video productions of sexual acts’ has been met with protests from support groups and others, who argue that the bill would legalize the exchange of money for sex,” which lawmakers have disputed.

LONDON — Hot Octopuss has rolled out a public service campaign to raise awareness around men’s mental health.

“Globally, on average, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, yet men’s mental health is still a taboo subject; unfortunately too many men lose their lives as a result,” a rep said. “Hot Octopuss often advocates for men’s mental health and has released a series of videos of men sharing their struggles with mental health and toxic masculinity in a bid to encourage more men to have this important discussion.”

The videos explore emotions and identity, perception and media, masculinity, sex and self-love and general advice.

The campaign is personal to the company’s head of creative, Kelly Gordon, who lost her best friend Tom to suicide when both were 19 years old.

“A large contributing factor of Tom taking his own life was the pressure on him as a man within a society that is so quick to judge,” Gordon said. “Making the series of videos with men from all different backgrounds was really important to me to demonstrate that men do still hide their feelings.”

“As a brand, we want to encourage men to keep talking and to remind them all feelings are valid,” she added. “The purpose of these videos is to break the stigma and encourage men from all backgrounds to speak up about their mental health and to speak to their friends and family about anything they’re going through.”

The campaign is being promoted on social media with the hashtags #MensHealthWeek2022, #SelfLoveNotStigma and #HotOctopuss.
