Art Short Film ‘The Porn Selector’ Starring Kasey Warner Premieres at MoMA

NEW YORK — “The Porn Selector,” a short film directed by visual artist and filmmaker Lou Fauroux and starring Kasey Warner, premiered earlier this month at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

The short, shown during MoMA’s prestigious New Directors/New Films festival, is the first part of the French queer artist’s The Internet Collapses Series. That series is a section of a larger artistic project called WhatRemains, described by the director as “an ecosystem that takes multidisciplinary forms: installation, video, sound, sculpture, 3D animation, VR, etc.”

WhatRemains, an artist’s statement explains, “aims to point out the ethical issues and consequences of the omnipresence of the internet and artificial intelligences within the human experience. What power dynamics govern the Internet, and can we detect a form of religiosity in it?”

The Internet Collapse is a series of films based on the scenario of what happens when, as a result of a general depletion of resources, the Internet comes to an end.

“With the web gradually coming to an end, humans  — each in their own way — are trying to prepare for life after the Internet,” the statement continues. “This collapsological context runs through the entire series. In each volume, the story is woven around a protagonist who organizes and plans his or her post-Internet life, as the entropic end of the WWW looms ever larger. Each character is followed in his or her environment, singular questions and personal issues.”

In the first installment, Warner plays Kasey, a former porn star who has transitioned into being a producer.

According to the synopsis, Kasey “sustains her livelihood through her website, which offers a wide range of adult content accessible through monthly payments. Since the announcement of the end of the internet, she has been devastated but has found a solution that could help her survive in the post-internet collapse era. By scouring vast amounts of online sexually explicit images, she selects and downloads pornographic content, including images and videos. She then prints and burns them onto DVDs, tapes, engravings, and other sexual objects. When the internet finally collapses, she aims to have a stronghold on the market and sell her valuable products.”

Warner told XBIZ after the screening that helping to create “The Porn Selector” with Fauroux was “a true delight.”

“Words can’t describe how proud and grateful I am for her,” Warner added. “Seeing sex work being presented in such a thoughtful, creative, and empowered way at such a celebrated art institution makes me excited for new conversations and opportunities for the sex work community as the gap between adult and mainstream media continues to narrow.”

Fauroux has a background in the Los Angeles adult industry and in 2022 graduated from Paris’ National Art School. Her work has been showcased in both independent venues and group exhibitions. Fauroux also founded an experimental electronic music label, FÆRIES, in collaboration with DJ Jennifer Cardini.

Democratic Governor Fails to Veto Kansas Age Verification Bill

TOPEKA — Kansas’ Democratic governor Laura Kelly expressed strong reservations about the state’s version of the age verification bills being sponsored around the country by anti-porn religious conservative activists, but ultimately decided not to veto it, allowing it to become law by default without her signature.

Kelly’s refused to veto or fully endorse SB 394 on Friday, after the bill had passed 40-0 in the Senate and 92-31 in the House.

“While well-meaning in its efforts to protect children from content the legislature considers ‘harmful to minors,’” Kelly said in a statement explaining her ambivalence, “this bill is vague in its application and may end up infringing on constitutional rights, which is an issue being litigated in other jurisdictions over similar bills.”

“For that reason, I will allow this bill to become law without my signature,” she added.

SB 394 targets commercial entities which distributes material the state considers “harmful to minors” 25% of its webpages or more. Those sites must verify the age of Kansas users before allowing access, using either a database or a kind  of age-verification technology yet to be specified by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported.

“Failure to do so can result in lawsuits by the attorney general, with civil penalties of up to $10,000 for each violation or lawsuits by the parent or legal guardian of a minor for statutory damages of no less than $50,000,” the Capital-Journal explained.

As XBIZ reported, SB 394 was carried in the state House by Republican Rep. Susan Humphries, who also served as the bill’s lead spokesperson to Kansas media.

During the House debate, Humphries — whose pre-politics background is in marketing and Bible Studies workshops — dismissed the many concern of Democratic lawmakers, instead rallying her fellow Republicans with incendiary claims that pornography “normalizes violence and abuse against women and children,” and debunked pseudoscientific pronouncements about how porn may impact “brain development and functioning” and is “potentially biologically addictive.”

Among those who expressed misgivings about SB 394, Democratic Rep. Rui Xu warned of “unintended consequences,” noting that the current slew of age verification bills contains definitions that are “much broader than we actually think” and could lead to censorship of numerous works of art and literature.

SB 394 will go into effect on July 1.

FSC’s Alison Boden Testifies Against California Age Verification Bill, Urges Action to Defeat It

SACRAMENTO — Free Speech Coalition Executive Director Alison Boden testified against AB 3080, the California version of the age verification bills being sponsored around the country by anti-porn religious conservative activists.

AB 3080 was introduced in the California Assembly by Republican Modesto Assemblymember Juan Alanis, a former law enforcement office, and was heard Tuesday in the Assembly’s Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection.

AB 3080 would require sites with more than one-third of “material harmful to minors” to scan government IDs or otherwise verify the identity of the user.

The bill was originally drafted by the socially conservative Citizens for Renewing America and is supported by religious groups including the California Catholic Conference and California Baptists for Biblical Values.

Despite widespread opposition from groups including Electronic Frontier Foundation, Woodhull Action Fund, Netchoice and an array of sex ed, LGBTQ+, reproductive rights advocates, a motion to pass it out of committee succeeded and AB 3080 will be heard by the Judiciary Committee.

Boden testified before the committee, explaining the technological, constitutional, and privacy-related issues inherent in online age-verification.

“Still, proponents of the bill came out in force, including the Age Verification Providers Association, Exodus Cry, and Concerned Women for America, who all testified in favor,” an FSC statement explained.

Boden described AB 3080 as “a terribly flawed bill that never should have advanced out of committee, especially not one focused on consumer privacy.

“If we’re going to defeat these dangerous, unconstitutional bills, we’re going to need to be there to make sure all of our voices are heard,” she added. “We have a strong base in this state, and we need all Californians to reach out to their legislators to let them know the issues with AB-3080.”

The FSC has set up a page for those who want to speak out against age-verification in California.
