GoAskAlex Featured on CBC Radio Show ‘Now or Never’

LOS ANGELES — GoAskAlex is featured on CBC Radio’s “Now or Never” show, hosted by Ify Chiwetelu and Trevor Dineen.

In the episode, “Afraid to Show it Off? Here’s How to Love the Skin You’re In,” Alex discusses her life in the public eye as an ostomate.

Alex explains that after undergoing an abdominal colectomy in 2019 in which her entire colon was removed due to ulcerative colitis, she was left with an ileostomy, or a permanent medical device on her abdomen.

In the interview, she touched on how this event shaped her body image and confidence.

“It’s difficult when so much of your career is in front of a camera and you’re so used to looking at modeling photos of yourself, editing your own videos and seeing your own body from every possible angle,” she said. “That is already a difficult thing to have to do — to be scrutinizing your body all the time — but then to see your body drastically change, whether that’s weight gain or a disability… seeing your body change and feeling like you don’t have any control over that is a difficult thing.”

Although happy to be relieved of the physical pain she’d been experiencing post-operation, Alex shared that she also felt insecurity about her new body.

“When you have these surgeries done, they give you a book of pamphlets on what it’s going to be like to have an ostomy and different medical devices, and there are some things they don’t talk to you about, one of them being sexuality,” she said. “It’s an assumption that disabled people are not having sex, or that we wouldn’t want to have sex, or that nobody would want to have sex with us because our bodies are not sexual, and they’re gross or wrong or damaged… and that’s just simply not true.”

She continued, “I didn’t feel like I was represented or that I had body-positive role models growing up, and as a woman with a disability I want young people to have those role models. I want to help create a world where people… have a better relationship with their bodies and can accept themselves as they are.”

Jessica Stoya Discusses Censorship of Adult Content for Document Journal

NEW YORK — Writer and former performer Jessica Stoya discussed the current state of online porn culture and the attempts to censor it, in a conversation published last week by Document Journal.

Stoya spoke with Motherboard journalist Samantha Cole and Document’s Camille Sojit Pejcha for a feature about “coming of age online, the internet’s horny history and the shadowy forces that determine what kind of porn you see.”

The writers also touted Cole’s recent book, “How Sex Changed the Internet and the Internet Changed Sex.”

Pejcha prefaced the discussion by noting that FOSTA-SESTA “incentivized social media platforms to crack down not just on problematic sexual materials, but all sexual speech. On TikTok, for instance, users have resorted to codewords like seggs and corn to share sexual education information without activating the censorship tripwire — an issue that poses particular challenges to sex workers and free speech advocates, but should be equally worrying to anyone paying attention.”

Stoya explained that when she first started spending time on the internet, it was “a very different, very uncensored place.”

“I remember I got all of my sex ed from the internet, in a very wholesome way,” she noted, adding that early access to adult discussions of boundaries helped her protect myself and “do less harm” when having sex with others.

“I just naturally picked up how to be, like, Hey, what do you like, is this okay?” Stoya recalled. “And I applied that to all of it — not just whips and chains and power dynamics, but like, Hey, do you wanna hold hands?”

Before Tumblr banned porn, Stoya explained, the site offered “amazing wealth of knowledge about sex and identity and sexual health.”

“That’s where I learned about asexuality; the community pointed me to resources,” she shared. “Tumblr was the place for people to learn and process together. Now, how are we even supposed to get that information out? That’s not going to rise to the top of the Pornhub algorithm.”

The retired performer and longtime writer on sex worker issues also repeated the oft-stated maxim that “porn is the canary in the coal mine.”

“We tried to warn you, but the coal mine’s on fire now,” she remarked. “We were screaming from the rooftops, but our warnings fell on deaf ears, because whores’ opinions don’t count, and there’s not enough squirting in the world to put it out — so I hope someone has an actual fire hose. Everyone should read Hannah Arendt and learn the history of fascism. Because we are multiple steps into a repeat of the previous century.

“If sex and porn and all these things are shadow banned, downranked, and deplatformed,” she added, “how do you even access that information?”

Vagina-Flavored Chocolates, Dirty Books and Ball-Gagged Gingerbread Men: the World of Goop Trademarks

LOS ANGELES — Amid speculation that Gwyneth Paltrow is planning to launch a “This Tastes Like My Vagina” chocolate line, as a follow-up to her successful “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle, the actor and Goop entrepreneur has applied for several risque trademarks.

Earlier this week, tabloids in the U.S. and the U.K. reported that Paltrow intended to release a line of chocolate and candy branded as “This Tastes Like My Vagina.”

On Thursday, a Paltrow rep told U.K. newspaper Metro that “Goop is not planning on launching any products in the chocolate category.”

According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), however, Paltrow’s company, Heretic Beauty Inc., applied in May 2020 for the trademark “This Tastes Like My Vagina” under the category of “staple foods,” which includes “coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar, rice, tapioca, sago, artificial coffee; flour and preparations made from cereals, bread, pastry and confectionery, ices; honey, treacle; yeast, baking-powder; salt, mustard; vinegar, sauces (condiments); spices; and ice.”

A month earlier, the company applied for the trademark “This Tastes Like My Orgasm,” also for staple foods.

Both trademarks predate the “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle trademark.

The USPTO’s full report reveals that Heretic Beauty Inc. has also applied to trademark the following phrases: Dirty Coconut, Dirty Gingerbread, Dirty Vanilla, Dirty Gardenia, Dirty Laundry, Dirty Mango, Dirty Dish, Dirty Rose, Dirty Peach, Dirty Rose, Dirty Grass, Dirty Grapefruit, Dirty Banana, Dirty Santa, Dirty Chai, Dirty Bird, Dirty Lingerie and Dirty Books.

Paltrow’s company also applied to trademark the word “Pornament” in the category of “cosmetics and cleaning preparations” and several more generic names like The Spiritualist, The Mycologist, The Naturalist, The Arborist, The Herbalist and others.

Then, three months ago, Paltrow also filed a trademark in several categories for a design of a gingerbread person biting on a ball gag and strapped with BDSM restraints.

Although it is unclear at this point whether Paltrow and Goop plan to move forward with products matching these trademarks, the success of the “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle suggests that there may be more products on the horizon from Goop’s sex-branded lines.
