‘Deep Throat’ Screenings Celebrate 50th Anniversary

LOS ANGELES — “Deep Throat” is celebrating its 50th anniversary with screenings at Laemmle Royal Theater on Friday and Saturday.

The red carpet event and screening of the film’s 4K restoration will be presented by the late director’s son and daughter, Gerard Jr. and Christar Damiano, respectively, who will share their stories of being on location in Miami during the filming of “Deep Throat.”

The event will also feature sexologist Dr. Susan Block moderating a post-screening panel with Hershel Savage and Nina Hartley, who will discuss the history, cultural impact and controversies surrounding the film.

“Deep Throat is synonymous with the sexual revolution of the 1970s,” said Hartley. “It captured lightning in a bottle, inspiring the intelligentsia of the day to embrace porno chic. The subsequent legal battle laid the groundwork for adult entertainment’s transformation from an illicit part of the culture to its current ubiquity. All of us who enjoy adult entertainment today owe a debt of gratitude to Gerard Damiano’s vision.”

Gerard Damiano Jr. addressed the film’s controversy.

“Some of the theaters have been reluctant to show ‘Deep Throat’ out of fear of push back based on comments the film’s star Linda Lovelace made years after it came out,” he said. “Her story is a very complicated one, and there is no doubt that she suffered greatly at the hands of her husband. People assume that he beat her up because she didn’t want to perform in the film, but the truth of what actually happened on the set of ‘Deep Throat’ is very different.”

“Linda’s comments were made while she was being coached by Andrea Dworkin and Gloria Steinem and are often taken out of context,” he added. “She was further used by the Reagan administration whose very public anti-porn agenda helped to galvanize his conservative Christian base. Linda later rejected the anti-porn feminists and made peace with her past.”

ASACP Names ImLive, Segpay, Gaelic WWW Conference ‘Featured Sponsors’ for June

LOS ANGELES — ASACP has named ImLive, Segpay and Gaelic WWW Conference as Featured Sponsors for June.

ASACP’s Executive Director Tim Henning shared that its sponsors rank among the industry’s most respected companies and exemplify corporate responsibility, ethical business practices, and simple technical measures can help protect minors and other sensitive users from accidental exposure to age-restricted materials online.

“ASACP’s family of sponsors highlight the industry’s efforts to protect the innocence of youth,” Henning said. “These market leaders work in unison to safeguard children while improving the online experience for adults.”

ImLive

An ASACP Corporate Sponsor since 2007, ImLive is a premium provider of live interactive webcam services that unite a large global base of individual performers and studios with customers from around the world.

Bridging the gap between consumers and producers puts ImLive at the forefront of ASACP’s mission to keep children out of and away from adult entertainment. For example, chat hosts must provide photo identification for age verification — part of a series of performer identification and compliance measures.

In addition, ImLive is monitored 24/7 via a dedicated monitoring tool. This tool shows a continuous multi-window real-time stream of models as they broadcast their live cameras on the site. Furthermore, site users can flag any live video chat stream they believe is inappropriate. The company also limits any explicitly sexual displays to paid private shows, where only adult members are allowed.

Beyond these measures and its support of ASACP, ImLive showcases its strong commitment to online child safety by using RTA meta-labeling and by displaying a “warning page” overlay.

Segpay

Since 2005, Segpay has helped high-risk businesses take payments quickly while implementing a compliance framework and has supported ASACP since 2016 as a valued Corporate Sponsor.

“Segpay is pleased to support ASACP in the vital work it does to keep children safe,” said Segpay CEO Cathy Beardsley. “As the mother of three children myself, I believe nothing is more important than the safety of our youth. Last year, Visa mirrored MasterCard regulations to validate the ages of anyone appearing in user-uploaded content. ASACP offers an entire toolset to help merchants stay compliant with the recent card brand regulations.”

Beardsley noted that Segpay’s uncompromising commitment to compliance requires it to regularly review its merchants’ content to help identify, report, and immediately shut down any child exploitation it discovers.

“ASACP plays a critical role in reporting any issues we uncover,” Beardsley concluded. “This oversite helps the adult industry become more accepted in mainstream society — and is good for business in general.”

Gaelic WWW Conference

An ASACP In-Kind Media Sponsor since 2017, the Gaelic WWW Conference takes place every other year in beautiful Ireland, offering three days of business, panels, and Irish lifestyle. The event attracts web admins, media buyers and sellers, program partners, service providers, and others involved in the online entertainment industry, including crypto, e-commerce, dating, gaming, and health, who gather to carve out a common ground for growth in a comfortable environment.

“We are happy to support ASACP with our webmaster conference in Ireland, as child protection is one of the most important tasks these days,” said Gaelic WWW Conference founder Roland Grotheer. “Companies working in the adult business have an extraordinary responsibility, and we are facing this challenge.”

“Let’s face it, we all need to work with trust and respect together,” Grotheer added. “Let us look forward together and talk about the journey’s path and how we can best manage it jointly in a wonderful location in Ireland.”

The next Gaelic WWW Conference in Ireland takes place June 17-20, 2024.

“ASACP appreciates ImLive, Segpay, and Gaelic WWW Conference for their commitment, generosity, and leadership in supporting the association and its mission to keep children out of and away from adult-oriented content,” Henning concluded. “ASACP’s sponsors are building a better future for the industry and society’s most vulnerable members. We thank them for this and encourage others to support our efforts on behalf of the children.”

Daily Beast Publishes Op-Ed by Cybersecurity Expert Questioning Age Verification Laws

LOS ANGELES — The Daily Beast yesterday published an opinion piece by a cybersecurity expert arguing that the current state-by-state legislative campaign to mandate age verification requirements for social media threatens online privacy and free speech.

The op-ed, titled “Social Media Age Requirements Are Anti-Free Speech,” is penned by Jeff Kosseff, associate professor of cybersecurity law in the United States Naval Academy’s Cyber Science Department. In it, Kosseff explains that while age verification requirements have been promoted with the supposed goal of protecting children online, they actually “endanger the ability of Americans to operate anonymously online, as the laws require the collection of information from everyone regardless of age.”

Moreover, Kosseff points out, the various state laws being enacted across the country — under the leadership of religious conservatives, but often with bipartisan support — fail to specify what type of age verification is required.

“Indeed, their vagueness on that point suggests that nobody quite knows how to meet the requirements without creating massive privacy problems,” Kosseff notes, citing as examples the Utah law requiring parental consent for children under 18 to use social media, a copycat Arkansas law and the proposed federal “Protecting Kids on Social Media Act.”

As no company can currently guarantee the safety of personal information given the available technology, legislators wantonly display a “lack of concern for anonymity,” Kosseff contends.

“Debates about online harms often fuel calls for real-name requirements or other abrogations of anonymity,” he writes. “Although these proposals often are well intentioned, they ignore the prospect of silencing marginalized groups that do not have the luxury of speaking and receiving information under their real names.”

Kosseff — author of the standard history of Section 230, “The Twenty-Six Words That Created the Internet” (2019) as well as the forthcoming “Liar in a Crowded Theater: Freedom of Speech in a World of Misinformation” — acknowledges legitimate concerns about the potential harms of social media for teenagers. However, he doubts that age verification requirements “are effective enough to survive a constitutional challenge.”

“If there is any possibility of dodging an identification requirement, there is a good chance that determined teenagers will figure out how to do so,” he concludes. “Yet millions of other social media users who play by the rules will have no choice but to turn over their personal information.”
