Just Say ‘Corn’: Washington Post Highlights Hypocrisy of ‘Algospeak’

WASHINGTON — The Washington Post published a lengthy report today highlighting the hypocrisy of algorithm censorship, which forces sex workers and other to develop “Algospeak,” nonsensical euphemisms to refer to banned words and concepts.

“To avoid angering the almighty algorithm, people are creating a new vocabulary,” the Post subheaded the story, titled “Internet ‘Algospeak’ Is Changing Our Language in Real Time, From ‘Nip Nops’ to ‘Le Dollar Bean’”

“Algospeak,” as defined by the paper’s top internet trends reporter, Taylor Lorenz, refers to “code words or turns of phrase users have adopted in an effort to create a brand-safe lexicon that will avoid getting their posts removed or down-ranked by content moderation systems.”

“For instance, in many online videos, it’s common to say ‘unalive’ rather than ‘dead,’ ‘SA’ instead of ‘sexual assault,’ or ‘spicy eggplant’ instead of ‘vibrator.’”

Algospeak is “becoming increasingly common across the internet as people seek to bypass content moderation filters on social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Twitch,” Lorenz noted.

And chief among those discriminated against by the almighty algorithm are sex workers, the LGBTQ community and sex educators.

Sex workers, “who have long been censored by moderation systems, refer to themselves on TikTok as ‘accountants’ and use the corn emoji as a substitute for the word ‘porn.’”

Lorenz brought up the LGBTQ YouTube creators who spoke about having videos demonetized in 2017 for saying the word “gay.”

“Some began using the word less or substituting others to keep their content monetized,” she wrote. “More recently, users on TikTok have started to say ‘cornucopia’ rather than ‘homophobia,’ or say they’re members of the ‘leg booty’ community to signify that they’re LGBTQ.”

Issues about women’s health, pregnancy and menstrual cycles on TikTok “are also consistently down-ranked,” according to sex educator and entrepreneur Kathryn Cross.

“She replaces the words for ‘sex,’ ‘period’ and ‘vagina’ with other words or spells them with symbols in the captions. Many users say ‘nip nops’ rather than ‘nipples.’”

“It makes me feel like I need a disclaimer because I feel like it makes you seem unprofessional to have these weirdly spelled words in your captions,” Cross told Lorenz, “especially for content that’s supposed to be serious and medically inclined.”

German Regulator Who Shut Down xHamster Unveils New AI Surveillance Tool

DÜSSELDORF, Germany — The local official crusading for Germany to hide all sexual content behind an age verification wall unveiled this week an AI tool called KIVI that automatically scans all online content to determine which images are not compliant.

Tobias Schmid, director of the State Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia, and one-man War on Porn, gave a press conference yesterday boasting of the surveillance innovation and claimed he had coined the name KIVI after “KI” (the German initials for AI) and “VI” from the Latin word “vigilare” (“to survey”).

Schmid called this authoritarian fantasy come to life a “fantastic combination,” German tech news site NetzPolitik.org reported yesterday.

NetzPolitik reporter Sebastian Meineck, who has been covering Schmid’s meticulous, obsessive attempts to ban all sexual content from open platforms in Germany and Europe wrote that “pornography” is one of the clearest targets of the local bureaucrat’s new surveillance engine.

Schmid included the category among others like “extremism, hate speech, swastikas or the glorification of drugs” as topics that his “most modern” KIVI, which he has already expanded nationwide, has been trained to detect.

KIVI was developed by Berlin-based Condat under Schmid’s supervision and is now reportedly being used by all 14 state media authorities in Germany.

KIVI is currently surveying images, texts and videos on all websites, as well as apps like “Telegram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, the Russian Facebook competitor VKontakte and the video portal Bitchute,” NetzPolitik reported.

“KIVI recognized 20,000 potential violations within a year,” the report continued. “The violations are then checked by humans [employed and selected by Schmid] using a ticket system. According to the NRW Media Authority, there are around eight student assistants and seven lawyers. After sorting out erroneous hits, 6,700 violations remained. Some KIVI hits lead to reports on the platforms, and others also to criminal charges.”

Media supervisor Schmid has described the cooperation with the State Criminal Police Office of North Rhine-Westphalia as “very good.”

In general, NetzPolitik’s Meineck points out, “artificial intelligence often adopts biases, prejudices and biases in their training data,” although Schmid claimed with characteristic determination that the AI tool is “neutral” and “so wonderfully uncorrupt.”

The regulator also explained that KIVI presents blurry images in a small preview window at first and employees manually have to guess if they are “violence or pornography” by using a slider to sharpen the image.

“I am pretty sure that we will gradually get the mass of cases under control,” Schmid concluded.

‘Grandfalloon’ Speculative Fiction Zine Seeks Sci-Fi Erotica for Summer Issue

CANADA — The quarterly magazine Granfalloon: A Speculative Fiction and Poetry Zine has announced a call for writers to submit erotic-based speculative work for their Summer 2022 issue.

“From Lovecraft’s Cthulhu to Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ to the Golden Age of science fiction fantasy with authors like Philip José Farmer and Theodore Sturgeon, to Captain Kirk’s green concubine in ‘Star Trek,’ and all the way up to the present with new generations of writers, the erotic as a theme and aesthetic has played a key role in speculative fiction/sci-fi,” said editor-in-chief Albert Mamet.

“We decided to dedicate a special issue exploring the erotic in speculative fiction, the idea emerging from discussions with some of our contributors who write erotic sci-fi. To accomplish this goal, we’ve brought on a guest editor with roots both in the erotic and science fiction writing communities and teamed up with an illustrator, Joe Swarctz, who’ll be providing the cover art and be featured as a contributing artist,” added Mamet.
