Maitland Ward Lands Lead Role in Mainstream Thriller 'Just for You'

LOS ANGELES — Reigning XBIZ “Performer of the Year” Maitland Ward has landed the lead role in the forthcoming mainstream sci-fi thriller “Just for You” from Emmy-nominated writer/director Sonja O’Hara.

The feature is set to begin production later this year ahead of a planned Summer 2023 release date.

“Just for You” centers on “a cybersecurity specialist who is attacked in the virtual world of the metaverse, and a woman (Ward) who unleashes her dangerous alter-ego, Vivian, to exact revenge on those responsible,” a rep said.

O’Hara is a 2021 Daytime Emmy Awards nominee for “Outstanding Short Form Daytime Fiction Program” for her digital drama series “Doomsday” and recently wrapped the indie horror feature “Mid-Century” starring Bruce Dern, Stephen Lang and Shane West.

She was cited as one of 2017’s “10 Filmmakers to Watch” by The Independent magazine.

“Like so many, I grew up watching Maitland on ABC and felt like I really knew her; when I learned she was making her return to mainstream film, I was curious. To now get the pleasure to not only direct Maitland, but also share this collaboration with her by playing these complicated characters in this beautiful dark film, well, it’s such a cool opportunity,” O’Hara said. “Audiences may feel they know her, but we haven’t seen or touched the surface of her capabilities as an artist and person.”

Ward’s plans for the remainder of 2022 include the expected Sept. 6 release of her memoir, “Rated X: How Porn Liberated Me from Hollywood,” and the Nov. 7 debut of her streaming comedy series, “The Big Time.”

“With my upcoming memoir, new comedy series and now working on this feature with such talented people, I am beyond excited for the year to come,” noted Ward. “I can’t wait for all these challenges ahead. I am very lucky and truly blessed.”

NCMEC Report Again Debunks CSAM Myths

WASHINGTON — The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) issued this month its 2021 CyberTipline Report showing that child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is a problem across all kinds of online platforms.

The report clearly shows mainstream sites like Facebook far outranking adult sites in attempted illegal posts that should be subject to moderation.

NCMEC’s report applauded sites “that made identifying and reporting child abuse content a priority,” The Guardian reported last week.

NCMEC (usually pronounced “Nick Mick”) reported a rise of 35% in items found and removed over the 2020 numbers, and noted that this may represent an improvement in moderation efforts on the part of platforms.

In February 2021, Pornhub announced a series of safety and security policies to enhance measures for verification, moderation and detection of content with the goal of positioning the company “at the forefront of combating and eradicating illegal content.”

The new measures were adopted during the independent review of the company’s content compliance program conducted by Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP. The review began in April 2020 and focused on various MindGeek platforms’ “moderation practices and other procedures for preventing users from uploading non-consensual content, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and any other content that lacks the consent of all parties.”

According to NCMEC, the record 29.3 million items of CSAM that were found and removed across the internet in 2021, “can be indicative of a variety of things including larger numbers of users on a platform or how robust an ESP’s [electronic service provider’s] efforts are to identify and remove abusive content.”

“NCMEC applauds ESPs that make identifying and reporting this content a priority and encourages all companies to increase their reporting to NCMEC,” the non-profit organization added. “These reports are critical to helping remove children from harmful situations and to stopping further victimization.”

The report noted that the overwhelming majority of reports made to NCMEC came from Facebook and other Meta companies, including 22 million pieces of CSAM reported from Facebook alone, 3.3 million reports from Instagram and 1.3 million from WhatsApp.

Google made 875,783 reports and Snap 512,522.

OnlyFans’ parent company Fenix International made 2,984 reports in 2021.

MG Freesites, reporting on behalf of Pornhub, made 9,029 CSAM reports in 2021.

Raven Alexis Passes Away at 35

Raven Alexis Passes Away at 35

LAS VEGAS — Retired performer Raven Alexis passed away last week from complications related to Crohn’s disease, according to relatives and industry associates. She was 35 years old.

On his Instagram account, Alexis’ husband noted that her GI issues led to “infection and sepsis that were unexpected.”

Alexis was a popular performer, mainly associated with Digital Playground, from 2008 until 2011. A few of her 50-plus IAFD credits extend to 2018, although she had been retired since the early-to-mid 2010s.

In 2012, Alexis won the XBIZ Award for female “Supporting Acting Performance of the Year” for Digital Playground’s “Top Guns.”

After her adult career, Alexis shared an extremely successful beauty and cosmetic injection practice with her husband in the Las Vegas area.

Their spa gained renown as a go-to Botox and lip injection specialist practice for a large number of adult entertainers, though some of their patients only learned about Alexis’ past on-camera fame only after her passing.

“She had completely been able to remake her life in the beauty business, and with her family, after she left porn, and she and her husband didn’t particularly mention,” her adult industry name or career, an industry source who is one of their patients told XBIZ.

Alexis is survived by her husband and four children.

A celebration of her life is being planned for Saturday, April 2 in the Vegas area.

Will Ryder’s ‘Love, Sex & Fashion’ Gets Exclusive HotMovies VOD Release

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Director Will Ryder’s forthcoming rom-com “Love, Sex & Fashion” will stream exclusively on HotMovies from April 1-14 ahead of its traditional release on DVD April 19.

The action takes place “amidst the world of couture style when a famous fashion mogul suddenly dies, passing control of his empire to his nurse (Kat Dior) and not to his womanizing VP (Charles Dera) as expected. What complicates matters is that the VP was having a secret love affair with the nurse behind the mogul’s back and now she’s his boss,” a rep said. “Hilarious situations arise as the two battle for love and corporate power in what could be the best sex comedy of the year.”

Besides Dior and Dera, the sprawling cast includes Nicole Auclair, James Bartholet, Aliya Brynn, Frank Bukkwyd, Flynt Dominick, Jillian Janson, Lacy Lennon, Madi Meadows, Tyler Nixon, Tommy Pistol, Jay Romero, Bree Star, Misty Stone and Whitney Wright.

“Without a doubt, and I’ve said this before, but this is our most enjoyable movie yet. I’s just perfect,” said Ryder. “I can’t help it that we keep getting better and better at making movies.”

“We bury James Bartholet’s character six feet under in the first act, but the dude still manages to be funny as hell,” Ryder added.  “You cannot harness Bartholet, he’s a great actor, but Tommy Pistol steals the show with a stellar, award-worthy comedic performance.”

Co-producer Scott David added, “The cast is superb. Being funny and sexy at the same time is nearly impossible for most actresses, but these gorgeous female thespians are equally good at both, making this movie, in my opinion, a major contender for not only best comedy but also movie-of-the-year status.”

Ryder said he managed to “nip-and-tuck” the final edit just enough to receive approval from Adam & Eve execs for release.

“It was a battle,” he noted, “but I tend to go a bit overboard with comedy, so I see their point. In the end, this is now a must-see feature movie comedy, quite possibly our best ever.”

The release follows Ryder’s “Love, Sex & TV News” and “Love, Sex & Lawyers” from Adam & Eve.

TikTok Using ‘Porn Filters’ to Censor Other Types of Controversial Content

BERLIN — German investigative journalists have obtained evidence from TikTok corroborating free speech advocates’ claims that some platforms are using “porn filters” to target other controversial content involving issues like politics, human rights and LGBTQ+ expression.

According to a report released last week via German public broadcasting’s flagship investigative program Tagesschau, TikTok was found to be “shadowbanning posts containing certain terms,” allegedly for “safety reasons,” using filters that supposedly only blocked “porn.”

TikTok, owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company with ties to China’s governing CCP, told Tagesschau that algorithm flaws were to blame for the blocks of non-porn words such as the German words for “gay,” “queer,” “LGBTQ,” “homosexual,” “transsexual,” “government in exile,” “National Socialism” and even “Auschwitz,” the name of the infamous concentration camp.

The filter also blocked mentions of “Peng Shuai,” a Chinese tennis player who has been embroiled in a political controversy after accusing a Chinese government official of sexual coercion.

Tagesschau’s findings are consistent with persistent accusations by sex workers and free speech advocates that “porn filters,” which War on Porn crusaders promote as positive enhancements of platform moderation, are expansive and likely to be unleashed against all kinds of expression considered controversial by those who implement them.

Tagesschau found that users were able to post the offending keywords on TikTok, but “the posts were not visible to others.”

In response to a request from the German program, TikTok released a statement saying, “We have set up mechanisms to automatically filter out potentially harmful comments. We are aware that this procedure was not targeted in this case, and we are working at full speed to revise our procedure.”

In the case of Peng Shuai, Tagesschau explained, TikTok improbably “claimed that her name was automatically blocked because it contained the letters ‘Hua,’ a derogatory term sometimes used for sex workers in Austria.”

Investigative reporter Catharina Felke said there was a “striking disparity between the company’s public pledges and their actions.”

“We found in our research that terms associated with the LGBTQI community were disproportionately affected by the ban,” Felke told German news site DW. “But at the same time TikTok has been very vocal about supporting LGBTQI creators — some of them even financially. They also started an initiative with the Holocaust Memorial to educate the public about this issue, however they are banning words such as Auschwitz, which of course makes it difficult to even have a discussion about it.”

“Moderating certain keywords without clear rules seems arbitrary,” said Frederike Kaltheuner of Human Rights Watch. “It is highly problematic that as a user you do not understand what the actual rules are.”

Wall Street Journal Hails the Rise of ‘Twee Design’ in Sex Toys

Wall Street Journal Hails the Rise of 'Twee Design' in Sex Toys

NEW YORK — The Wall Street Journal highlighted on Saturday the trend of how the “twee design movement” has expanded into the pleasure products industry.

Art and Design section writer Fiorella Valdesolo explained how “the fact that the new generation of sex toys, from brands like Deia, Maude and Smile Makers, look like design objets has also helped overhaul their image.”

The term “twee” is borrowed from indie music, where it describes the intersection of hipster, girlish and whimsical — think Zooey Deschanel. Valdesolo emphasized how brands with such a design aesthetic had catapulted vibrators into heretofore out-of-bounds mainstream big-box stores.

“Now you can buy one at Bloomingdale’s,” she noted. “Also, Nordstrom and, most recently, Sephora, which began stocking Dame as one of its first pleasure-product brands last month.”

Valdesolo also explained how at-home isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic became a factor in increasing sexual self-exploration.

“In the first year of the pandemic, Maude, the sexual pleasure brand that has actor Dakota Johnson as an investor and co-creative director, had 25,000 pre-orders for its vibrator,” she wrote. “Goop’s premiere vibrator sold out in a day, upon its launch in February 2021; and Jessica Richards, owner of Brooklyn beauty boutique Shen Beauty, hasn’t been able to keep Dame vibrators in stock.”

The article also gives props to “wellness”-branded influencers and girlbosses such as Gwyneth Paltrow, whose “candor on social media and on the popular Netflix show ‘Sex, Love & Goop’ has helped shake off taboos around the topic.”

Adam & Eve Releases Results of Newest Consumer Survey

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Adam & Eve has released the statistics from its new survey that compares results to the same questions they asked 10 years ago about whether people prefer to have sex with the lights on or off.

The survey results reveal most adults still prefer making love with “a mixture of the lights being on and off,” a rep revealed.

In 2011, 48% of the respondents preferred changing it up with the lighting while 32% of 2021’s respondents did. Lights off were preferred by 41% of the respondents in 2011 while only 28% of those polled in 2021 like it in the dark. And only 10% of those surveyed in 2011 chose lovemaking with the lights on compared to 11% in 2021.

Only 1% of the respondents in 2011 had no preference compared to 29% in 2021.

Dr. Jenni Skyler, resident sexologist at Adam & Eve, was not surprised by the results. “For most couples, having the lights on or off depends on the situation, mood and time of day,” she said. “I’m pleased to see the number of people who prefer lovemaking with the lights off has gone down. While making love in the dark can be a sensory heightening experience, I encourage all couples to feel comfortable and uninhibited with the lights on as well.”

Marketing Director Chad Davis added, “When it comes to sex, Adam & Eve offers a wide variety of products to enhance any experience regardless of the lighting situation.”

The web-based survey, conducted by an independent third party survey company of over 1,000 American adults age 18 and up, was sponsored by Adam & Eve to study sexual preferences and practices.
