UK’s Online Safety Bill Criticized Over Expanding Scope

LONDON — The U.K. government continues expanding the scope of a proposed Online Safety Bill (OSB), under criticism by opponents and digital rights advocates that it is increasingly becoming an out-of-control, repressive “kitchen sink” bill.

“Back in May, when the draft Online Safety Bill was published, the government said it would impose a duty of care on digital service providers to moderate user-generated content in a way that prevents people — and especially children — from being exposed to illegal and/or harmful stuff online,” TechCrunch reported today. “Since then parliamentary committees have been poring over the proposal.”

But U.K. parliamentarians have been asked by concerned observers to “ensure the legislation does not misfire — including by failing to hit its intended targets,” which by now now include a vast, nebulous list of supposed wrongdoers, with a scope that ranges from “terrorists and distributors of CSAM to bullies, racists and trolls” and beyond.

This week, the Boris Johnson-led government added “scam ads” to the list, after pressure from lobbyists.

“In parallel, it has also launched a consultation on strengthening existing regulation of the online ad industry, laying out a range of options to beef up rules for advertisers more generally,” TechCrunch reported.

This mission creep is what digital rights advocates have been warning about when explaining that the alleged intention of “protecting the children” had quickly devolved into suspect, sweeping claims about “the harms of pornography.”

Sex-Inclusive Social Media Platforms Targeted

Last month, as XBIZ reported, Boris Johnson government officials confirmed last week that social media sites “hosting large amounts of pornographic material, such as Twitter and Reddit” would have to “introduce systems to remove adult material in the U.K., or introduce age checks to determine whether users are over 18.”

That was one of the first official confirmations that the measure has as eventual targets not only “pornographic websites” — however politicians in power in specific districts decide to define that term — but also any website that tolerates sexually explicit content.

Eradicating adult content from open platforms has been one of the core objectives of the leading religiously inspired, U.S.-based groups that are at the forefront of the War on Porn, including NCOSE and Exodus Cry and their mouthpieces.

As many sex workers and advocates have pointed out, mandating age verification on any site that might host sexual expression deemed “pornographic” by local authorities would result, in practice, in a serious threat to free speech, to LGBTQ+ education and to the ability of sex workers to market their content and make a living.

Since sex workers are stigmatized and discriminated against by platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, Twitter and Reddit are currently two of the few general-interest online spaces that tolerate adult content. They also provide sex workers with the ability to promote accounts on premium fan platforms such as OnlyFans, an option that has become crucial to their income and livelihood.

The Increasingly Sprawling ‘Safety” Bill

Besides anti-porn crusaders, campaigners “on a range of online safety issues,” TechCrunch explained today, “have also been very vocal in pressing for the bill to be beefed-up to deal with their particular [concerns]. So despite earlier drafts already facing criticism of being a ‘kitchen sink’ bill on account of the sprawling scope — and a warning from a former secretary of state, no less, that ‘everyone is going to try and hang their own particular hobby horse’ on the bill — in recent weeks there have been a flotilla of announcements from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to [add] even more provisions in the name of further strengthening the proposal.”

The current draft of the OSB mandates that sites belonging to the yet-undefined legal category of “pornography websites” be required to provide “robust” age checks. The bill will also expand “the list of criminal content and offenses that will be added to the face of the bill to force more proactive takedowns from platforms,” and will order “the largest platforms” to provide users “with a verification option and the ability to only receive replies and messages from verified accounts — with the goal of giving people tools to beat trolls.”

Anti-Porn Lobby NCOSE Urges Action Against Netflix for ‘Normalizing’ Sex Work

WASHINGTON — Religiously inspired anti-porn lobby NCOSE, formerly known as Morality in Media, released yesterday its annual “Dirty Dozen” list of businesses they are encouraging their followers to target, alleging these corporations are “major contributors to sexual exploitation.”

Among the dubious claims made by NCOSE during their presentation and ballyhooed “reveal broadcast,” the influential Beltway lobbying group claimed that Netflix “glorifies sexual violence, sexualizes children, normalizes incest, trivializes prostitution and child sex trafficking and propagates graphic sex scenes and gratuitous nudity — all in the name of entertainment.”

NCOSE was particularly upset that Netflix failed to stigmatize sex workers to their liking.

Netflix, NCOSE condemned, “normalizes the commercial sex industry and disrespects the victimized, prostituted women by referring to them as ‘sex workers.’ This choice of language contributes to the harmful narrative that prostitution is just a ‘normal job.’”

Besides Netflix, the anti-porn organization, which saw its budget and spending skyrocket in the last two years due to ongoing campaigns to demonize adult content as “a public health crisis” and to harm the lives and livelihoods of sex workers by convincing payment processors to discriminate against them, included in their 2022 “Dirty Dozen” list: Twitter, Reddit, Etsy, Google, Meta (the conglomerate formerly known as Facebook), Verisign, Visa, Discord, Kik, OnlyFans and — rather strangely — Christian summer camp Kanakuk.

NCOSE and its highly-paid executives put forward a number of sensationalizing allegations against these corporations they are hoping to influence or punish, akin to statements in previous years that Sports Illustrated and Cosmopolitan magazine contained “hardcore pornography,” or older campaigns to sue bookstores for selling classic novels that referred to sex work, which the faith-oriented group considers “obscene.”

NCOSE Targeting Companies for Failing to Stigmatize Sex Work

These are some of the allegations made by NCOSE against the companies on their 2022 hit list:

Netflix is supposedly peddling “rampant sexual objectification and glamorization of abuse. Sociologists have identified a marked increase in graphic sex scenes and gratuitous nudity permeating Netflix shows. Further, Netflix continues a trend of normalizing the sexualization of children and whitewashing the violence and exploitation in prostitution.”

Twitter, according to NCOSE, is “rampant with accounts and posts functioning as advertisements for commercial sex — including prostitution.” The platform is “being used to advertise prostituted persons and sex trafficking victims for purposes of commercial sexual exploitation, often via pornographic images or webcamming. Sometimes these tweets include offers to meet in person for “escorting” services, and sometimes they ask users to follow and pay for nude images, videos or livestreaming.” Moreover, they claim, “Twitter is filled with pornography that supports rape myths, normalizes adult-with-teen-themed and incest-themed exploitation and reinforces degrading racially charged sexual stereotypes.”

Reddit, they claim, hosts “‘subreddits’ [with] countless sexually explicit images and videos posted without consent (image-based sexual abuse), child sexual abuse material, hardcore pornography, prostitution and the likely facilitation of sex trafficking.” NCOSE is upset that “the Reddit User Agreement says nothing about sexually explicit or adult content — allowing it to flourish without any meaningful age or consent verification.”

Etsy, NCOSE claims, in “in the business of selling pornographic merchandise, image-based sexual abuse, misogynistic apparel and sex dolls — including ones resembling children and young teens. Customers complain about unwanted exposure to pornography and sexually explicit/suggestive content through recommendations, some likening this experience to ‘sexual harassment.’”

Meta (formerly Facebook), according to NCOSE, “owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp: all of which are consistently under fire as primary places for grooming, sextortion, child sexual abuse materials, sex trafficking and a host of other crimes and ills.”

Google, NCOSE laments, “continues to drive users to [porn] sites – Pornhub, OnlyFans, XVideos, xHamster, and others — that are likely hosting criminal content. These sites are often listed on the first page

Discord, NCOSE claims, “consistently fails to address the extensive sexually graphic, violent and exploitative content on its thousands of private and public channels.“

Visa, in NCOSE’s view, “rightly cut ties with Pornhub in 2020 after public outcry regarding the rampant sex trafficking and child sexual abuse material hosted on the pornography site. However, Visa has since reinitiated a relationship with MindGeek (Pornhub’s parent company) and other pornography websites and failed to follow the example of Mastercard in requiring that sites hosting sexually explicit material implement common sense measures to prevent and remove illegal content. Furthermore, Visa also allows transactions for brothels and prostitution websites. Visa should live up to its corporate social responsibility principles and stop buttressing the infrastructure of the exploitative commercial sex industry. Visa claims it helps power money movement globally, but that must not include powering the global economy of commercial sexual exploitation.”

Verisign, an internet infrastructure company, NCOSE alleges, “must be held accountable for their inaction and poor policies that allow child sexual abuse to flourish on the .com and .net domains which they have been entrusted with to manage.”

Kik, NCOSE rues, is a chatting platform where “sexually explicit content is not only rampant, but easily accessible in the multitude of public group chats.”

OnlyFans, according to NCOSE, should not exist, period. This is what the faith-inspired lobby claims:

“OnlyFans exploded in notoriety and profit during COVID-19, as the subscription-based platform known for pornography preyed on widespread financial insecurities and capitalized on youth spending more time online. OnlyFans is set up as a potential ‘pyramid scheme’ incentivizing ‘creators’ to recruit new users — resulting in a flood on social media of false promises of fast cash and fame. Sex buyers and pimps maximize buying and selling people behind the security of a paywall. Yet survivors, whistleblowers, police and investigative journalists have uncovered child sexual abuse material, sex trafficking, rape videos and a host of other crimes, making the case clear: OnlyFans is a safe haven for exploitation.”

Finally, NCOSE is ordering its activists to target Christian summer camp Kanakuk.

“Between April-June 2021, NCOSE was contacted by three survivors of sexual abuse allegedly taking place at Kanakuk. One survivor we spoke with said that finally, at age 70, he was sharing what happened to him for the first time when he was a young counselor at the camp.  Another was a dad of young boys who was abused as a ‘kamper’ while a young teen. Despite the survivors who have come forward, at least a dozen lawsuits, and the news investigations that have uncovered practices at the camp that enabled the reported abuse to fester, Kanakuk has continued to minimize the reality that they have allowed abuse to flourish.”

As FSC Director of Communications Mike Stabile pointed out today, via Twitter, during the “Dirty Dozen” video reveal chat, NCOSE CEO Dawn Hawkins “gushed about a teenager who asked to show the presentation to his school, with no concern about whether this was age-appropriate for minors.”

Lana Del Bae Reflects on Career Successes, Cam Model of the Year Win

Lana Del Bae first started camming at the beginning of 2017, since she was not earning enough at her minimum-wage job at a toy and game store to get away from a toxic and abusive home life. Inspired by her sister, who also works in the adult industry, she set out to become a cam model.

“I secretly cammed from the corner of my parents’ attic until I was able to save up enough to move into my very first apartment,” she recalled. “My first apartment was actually in low-income housing and I’m now a homeowner, so when I say camming changed my life and saved my life, it’s from the truest part of my heart.”

While those initial couple of months were a blur of figuring out the business, Del Bae counts herself fortunate to have found her “cam fam” fast during those early days, drawing fans to her room who still continue to be loyal today.

“I’m so grateful for the love and support of my fan base over the years,” she expressed. “They really showed me that the sky’s the limit. They are so encouraging and excited about any new adventure I decide to take on, from covering my body in glitter — and regretting it a lot! — to endless voting during awards season and supporting me during long streams at different expos I attend. We make an incredible team and I feel so blessed.”

Now, as a co-host of Chaturbate’s “Sex Tales” podcast alongside acclaimed model Melody Kush, and a proud standard-bearer of the brand, Del Bae counts more than 200,000 followers on the platform, with tens of thousands across social media as well. With content released on Chaturbate’s Peach platform and streaming greatness in abundance, Del Bae hit a new peak after being crowned Cam Model of the Year at the 2022 XBIZ Awards.

In this exclusive Cam Star of the Month interview, the queenly broadcaster tells all, reflecting on a life well-lived and a five-year adult career that has begun to truly blossom.

XBIZ: How has camming empowered you personally and professionally?

DEL BAE: Ah, I love this question! Camming has changed my life in so many positive ways. Personally, it’s interesting because you’d think being naked in front of hundreds of people every night would make you self-conscious, but it’s actually so freeing and wonderful to be accepted and loved in this natural state of existence. It’s also empowered me to be able to partake in one of my largest passions: charity work.

We do monthly charity shows where my cam room and I raise money for everything from wildlife organizations to children’s hospitals to veteran support. It’s incredibly heartwarming to be able to have enough to give back to the world in such a big way.

Professionally, being my own boss — and being good at being my own boss — is amazing and so empowering. To know you set the rules of the game and reach goals all on your own steam is so uplifting. Of course, some days it’s challenging to have to be in charge of everything but my gosh, it’s so rewarding.

XBIZ: Describe your relationship with Chaturbate and why it’s your platform of choice.

DEL BAE: Chaturbate is the best platform hands-down. They treat each one of their models with respect and dignity, no matter if they are top front-page or just began streaming two weeks ago. The community of both models and members is so kind and welcoming. It’s my first and only choice and where I suggest anyone that shows interest in camming should start.

What really made me choose Chaturbate as my forever home was back in 2017, when I first started, I needed documentation for proof of income to move and Shirley, the COO of Chaturbate, personally wrote and signed paperwork for me to show to my landlord at the time. It was so kind and she truly went out of her way to take care of one of her models.

Now, five years later, I work very closely with her on different projects including our podcast, “Sex Tales,” and I see that same kindness and care towards me and all Chaturbate models. It’s rare to find a cam site or any place without a pecking order, but Chaturbate has created a home of inclusiveness and love and it’s amazing to be a part of it!

XBIZ: What other business opportunities and revenues do you focus on beyond camming?

DEL BAE: I create content — pictures and videos — for Chaturbate’s new platform, Peach. It’s been fun to be at the forefront of a new platform and see it blossom into life. I am also a co-host with Melody Kush on our podcast, “Sex Tales.” Podcasting was never something I had considered before, but it’s been such an amazing and fun journey; I love every second of it.

As for future plans, I would love to start a pitbull rescue project. Pitbulls are such sweethearts, but unfortunately, people try to make them into these aggressive dogs and then abandon them when they can’t handle them. I would love to bring them into my house, rehabilitate them, socialize them and give them a second chance at a new and better life. That’s just a personal passion project I have in mind for the future, though … I don’t think it’d be a good source of income, just a good source of happiness.

XBIZ: How do you manage your schedule as a creator, while making time for social media marketing?

DEL BAE: I am so anal about my scheduling and timing, haha. I get online at exactly 8 p.m. PST on nights that I cam and not a minute more or less. I know it sounds crazy, but holding myself to being on time makes me a better model. I know I have to be there and so I am. There’s no “Ah, maybe I’ll just take the day off.” Nope. I create my schedule a month in advance and stick to it!

Social media marketing honestly has never been hard to fit in for me. I used to be an event promoter for tons of EDM shows before I started camming so I was always posting about different shows, where people could get tickets and all that. When I became a cam model and realized online marketing was a big part of the job, I didn’t feel like it was something I had to learn or fit into my life. It kind of just came naturally.

XBIZ: What fun activities are you most known for on cam and how would your fans describe your overall vibe?

DEL BAE: Well, I’m known for putting frozen butt-plugs in my ass and fainting on the spot when you tip me 19 tokens, haha.

I think my fans would describe my vibe as laid-back and fun. We like to chill and enjoy each other’s company and see where the night takes us. Sometimes it takes us into six back-to-back cum-shows, sometimes we just sit and talk about life experiences and sometimes it leads into an evening of me wearing a llama head while dancing around naked … who knows?! The possibilities are endless.

XBIZ: Discuss a few of your favorite highlights from “Sex Tales,” as the show you co-host with Melody Kush releases episodes for its second season.

DEL BAE: “Sex Tales” has been such an interesting and fun experience from day one; learning how to navigate a completely new adventure has been eye-opening and life-changing in many ways. I love how much I’ve learned about the adult industry and the incredible people in it. I used to only know about the cam world, but learning the history of people that have been in all parts of the adult industry for 20-to- 30 years is amazing! These are the women that walked so I could run and it’s humbling to be able to interview them and learn about their journeys.

I can’t give away too much because I want you to be surprised, but I will say season two is a banger. The guests we have had the pleasure of working with have been amazing.

XBIZ: How was your X3 Expo experience, representing Chaturbate at the company’s massive exhibitor space?

DEL BAE: X3 Expo was amazing! Everyone there was so happy and kind. The fans that I met and the other models and exhibitors were all so sweet. I loved the layout of the event as well; it felt very easy to navigate and I loved the photo-op walls. They were so much fun! It was such a cool and great way to not only promote the X3 event on social media, but also to give everyone a way of interacting with the event in a new and clever way. Who doesn’t love taking pictures, right?

Representing Chaturbate is always great. I feel very taken care of and appreciated whenever I’m at the Chaturbate booth. They go out of their way to make sure their models have a happy experience. Which is why both days of camming at X3 Expo, I wore Chaturbate swag to flex my love of them.

XBIZ: What was it like to be crowned Cam Model of the Year at the 2022 XBIZ Awards in January?

DEL BAE: Absolutely insane! Honestly, I will never get used to the fact that other people know who I am now, haha. Truly though, it was amazing. I didn’t expect to win at all and started crying as soon as they called out my name. I am so humbled and appreciative of this community and I’m really proud that I have been able to work hard and be recognized for my achievements by such a well-known and respected company like XBIZ — it’s such an honor.

I remember the first year I started camming, seeing awards shows and thinking how cool that would be to even attend a show much less win an award. I’m thankful for Chaturbate for creating a platform for me to cam on and I’m thankful for XBIZ for recognizing the hard work I put into camming as my career — and I’m of course thankful for my fans who support me through thick and thin! Starting the year by winning this award has been such a wonderful experience. Even months later it still leaves me speechless to think about.

XBIZ: Any big goals for the year you’re excited about working to achieve?

DEL BAE: Well, last year I bought a house so I don’t know how I’ll beat that goal! This year, I think I’ll just relax a bit and go for something less lofty like traveling; I want to go to beautiful places and masturbate there. One of the great things about camming and content creation is that you can do it anywhere and for me, I want to experience that a bit this year … traveling is getting safer and I want to take advantage of that. I want to explore and I want to take my fans with me while I do it.

LOS ANGELES — Three films about sex workers, “Red Rocket,” “Zola” and “Shiva Baby,” received top honors from the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards handed out Sunday afternoon.

“Red Rocket,” a picaresque tale by acclaimed indie director Sean Baker about a trainwreck male porn star, won “Best Male Lead” for Simon Rex, while “Shiva Baby,” a comedy about sugaring, won the John Cassavetes Award given to the best feature made for under $500,000 and “Zola,” the film adaptation of a viral Twitter yarn about strippers and trafficked sex workers in the South, won “Best Editing” for Joi McMillon and “Best Female Lead” for Taylour Paige.

Rex also earned “Best Actor” honors from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

“Sean, you took a shot on me when I could not get a callback for a Geico commercial,” said Rex during his acceptance speech. “I’m so glad I delivered for you… I didn’t want to let him down and here I am. We made something very special on a very low budget with a 10-person crew… I’ve been in this business 25 years and it’s not about anything except doing good work. Retired adult performer Revika Reustle was among the nominees for “Best Supporting Actress” for her role in the mainstream drama “Pleasure,” whose director Ninja Thyberg — a Swedish filmmaker who spent several years in Los Angeles turning a short about an immigrant aspiring starlet from Sweden into her first feature — also received a nomination.

Magic Wand to Unveil 'Mini,' 'Pleasure as Art' Sculpture

NAPA, Calif. — Vibratex, the exclusive North American distributor of the Magic Wand brand, will showcase the Magic Wand Mini, as well as its recently commissioned “Pleasure as Art” sculpture, during the Altitude Intimates trade show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas March 14-16.

“We’re so excited to be unveiling two amazing works of art at our first in-person show in two years,” said Vibratex CEO Ken Herskovitz.

Powered by a rechargeable battery, the Mini’s 6,000 RPM brushless motor “delivers those deep, rumbly vibrations that all Magic Wands are known for,” explained a rep. “It’s compact enough for travel, but powerful enough to be anyone’s MVP. The Magic Wand Mini offers up to 2.5 hours of continuous cordless use on a full charge, and the intuitive buttons provide seamless control of its three intensity levels.”

The Mini is the first Magic Wand model to feature the company’s all-new packaging and branding that will be rolled out for all products over the next several months.

Magic Wand will also have the winning piece from its recent “Pleasure as Art” initiative on display during the Altitude Show.

The rep noted Vibratex commissioned a sculpture by Miami-based artist Dafne Blade, which consists of a painting and a throne made from 100 unsellable wands. Altitude attendees are invited to interact with the work of art and snap a photo of the sculpture, which Mashable recently referred to as “not only stunning, but evocative of ‘Game of Thrones.’”

“Every Magic Wand fan is going to feel a connection to this piece,” Herskovitz noted. “Aside from the visual impact sculpture itself, the painting it frames tells a captivating story. Prepare to spend some time examining all the details.”

Vibratex will showcase the sculpture as well as samples of the Magic Wand Mini in booth No. 430.

Kheper Launches New Line of Adult 'Pop-It' Toys

SEATTLE — Kheper Games has introduced its new line of adult pop-it toys with Penis Pop-It and Boob Pop-It.

“Kheper prides itself on always being on top of the latest trends,” a rep said, citing the debut of its “What the F*ck?” line of drinking and party games 16 years ago, and the popularity of its Squishy Toys collection launched in 2018.

“They have become the next stress-relieving item, following in the footsteps of fidget spinners and squishy toys,” Kheper CEO Brian Pellham said. “Adults enjoy using them as it [approximates] the fun pastime we’ve all been guilty of indulging in at one point or another by popping bubble wrap. Kheper, of course, likes to make toys naughty for adults. Just as we did with our Squishy Toys line a few years ago, we foresee this fun spoof becoming the next trend in adult stores as well.”
