Wall Street Journal Hails the Rise of ‘Twee Design’ in Sex Toys

Wall Street Journal Hails the Rise of 'Twee Design' in Sex Toys

NEW YORK — The Wall Street Journal highlighted on Saturday the trend of how the “twee design movement” has expanded into the pleasure products industry.

Art and Design section writer Fiorella Valdesolo explained how “the fact that the new generation of sex toys, from brands like Deia, Maude and Smile Makers, look like design objets has also helped overhaul their image.”

The term “twee” is borrowed from indie music, where it describes the intersection of hipster, girlish and whimsical — think Zooey Deschanel. Valdesolo emphasized how brands with such a design aesthetic had catapulted vibrators into heretofore out-of-bounds mainstream big-box stores.

“Now you can buy one at Bloomingdale’s,” she noted. “Also, Nordstrom and, most recently, Sephora, which began stocking Dame as one of its first pleasure-product brands last month.”

Valdesolo also explained how at-home isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic became a factor in increasing sexual self-exploration.

“In the first year of the pandemic, Maude, the sexual pleasure brand that has actor Dakota Johnson as an investor and co-creative director, had 25,000 pre-orders for its vibrator,” she wrote. “Goop’s premiere vibrator sold out in a day, upon its launch in February 2021; and Jessica Richards, owner of Brooklyn beauty boutique Shen Beauty, hasn’t been able to keep Dame vibrators in stock.”

The article also gives props to “wellness”-branded influencers and girlbosses such as Gwyneth Paltrow, whose “candor on social media and on the popular Netflix show ‘Sex, Love & Goop’ has helped shake off taboos around the topic.”

Adam & Eve Releases Results of Newest Consumer Survey

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Adam & Eve has released the statistics from its new survey that compares results to the same questions they asked 10 years ago about whether people prefer to have sex with the lights on or off.

The survey results reveal most adults still prefer making love with “a mixture of the lights being on and off,” a rep revealed.

In 2011, 48% of the respondents preferred changing it up with the lighting while 32% of 2021’s respondents did. Lights off were preferred by 41% of the respondents in 2011 while only 28% of those polled in 2021 like it in the dark. And only 10% of those surveyed in 2011 chose lovemaking with the lights on compared to 11% in 2021.

Only 1% of the respondents in 2011 had no preference compared to 29% in 2021.

Dr. Jenni Skyler, resident sexologist at Adam & Eve, was not surprised by the results. “For most couples, having the lights on or off depends on the situation, mood and time of day,” she said. “I’m pleased to see the number of people who prefer lovemaking with the lights off has gone down. While making love in the dark can be a sensory heightening experience, I encourage all couples to feel comfortable and uninhibited with the lights on as well.”

Marketing Director Chad Davis added, “When it comes to sex, Adam & Eve offers a wide variety of products to enhance any experience regardless of the lighting situation.”

The web-based survey, conducted by an independent third party survey company of over 1,000 American adults age 18 and up, was sponsored by Adam & Eve to study sexual preferences and practices.

Brooklynites Mock Activists Trying to Shutter Romantic Depot Boutique

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The battle over a Romantic Depot store that recently opened in the heart of gentrified Brooklyn heated up after a small group of anti-sex toy activists attempted to invoke an obscure zoning ordinance to shutter the location, while locals mocked them online and in person for their throwback prudishness.

As XBIZ reported last week, a tiny group of moralists led by a local realtor targeted the recently opened Clinton Hill branch of the Romantic Depot adult boutique chain, using outdated zoning regulations to argue that it should be treated as an “adult entertainment establishment” and not as a retail store.

The dildo-unfriendly activists were reportedly upset that the Romantic Depot store, the chain’s 11th in the tri-state area, had been classified as a “retail store” by the Department of Buildings. The minute-but-vocal group felt “this is misleading and that the shop appears to be an ‘adult establishment’ by the advertisements in the windows,” the Bronx’s News 12 explained.

Last Friday, the group organized a protest in front of the Fulton St. location, but they were outnumbered by a sizable number of Brooklynites holding placards defending the Romantic Depot, sexual pleasure and even LGBTQ+ expression.

The mockery of the odd alliance of  Neo-Victorian pearl-clutchers and NIMBY-minded realtors targeting the adult boutique spilled over onto neighborhood watch app NextDoor, after one of them posted an item with the subject line “I am posting this as a concerned community resident regarding the sex shop located at 906 Fulton St., a former check-cashing spot.”

“This location is right in the backyard of our youth attending the high school a block away,” this supposed “concerned neighbor” continued. “They are using the image of [neighborhood hero] Biggie Smalls whom the youth look up to, enticing them on all levels.”

The responses, to put it mildly, were overwhelmingly sardonic.

“But they use [a] Biggie Smalls image,” a Park Slope resident replied. “Everyone wants to have sex with Biggie Smalls.”

“I agree wholeheartedly,” a Boerum Hill denizen concurred with mock sincerity. “I was walking with my daughter to that very high school. When we passed the store I saw her eyes focus on it — something was evidently not right. The very next day my daughter announce[d] to the family that she is transgender. I couldn’t believe it. Clearly Biggie Smalls is to blame.”

Departing from the shenanigans, a Prospect Heights resident encapsulated the absurdity of the campaign.

“Sorry darling,” they wrote. “We can’t keep dumbing society for the sake of innocent children. People need to educate their children so they can navigate the world without the rest of us suffering because of it. Sex shops, sex-positivity [are] a reality.”

German Regulator Who Shut Down xHamster Describes Own Mission as ‘Kafkaesque’

DÜSSELDORF, Germany — Tobias Schmid, the obscure local bureaucrat who spearheads Germany’s War on Porn and recently led a successful movement to force ISPs to ban xHamster in the country, gave an exclusive interview last week where he expanded on his notions about online porn, admitted he has “no clear answer” on how to make age verification truly effective and acknowledged his anti-porn crusade is “a bit Kafkaesque.”

The recorded interview, originally published by online publication Übermedien last Friday under the headline ”Is There Any Point in Blocking Porn Portals Like xHamster?” was substantially excerpted by German tech news site Netzpolitik.org.

Schmid, a conservative politician and currently a local media regulator as Head of the State Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia, confessed that he “wants to prevent a cat-and-mouse game with xHamster” and other adult platforms by finding ways to “turn off the operators’ money supply instead of blocking [each] site,” Übermedien reported.

A Gang-Bang Obsession and Vagueness About Implementation

Schmid alleged he is committed to freedom of expression, but quickly clarified that he limits that freedom to what he considers “opinion formation.”

In Schmid’s view, xHamster — Germany’s most-visited porn site, according to Netzpolitik — is not “opinion-forming content in the classic sense”

“I’m not quite sure whether the optically intense depiction of gang-bang is so incredibly relevant to opinion-forming,” he added, referring to the group sex act that he has for years obsessed over in his condemnation of tube sites.

When the interviewer brought up the intricacies of deciding what kind of access to sexual information people should have through puberty, or from whom, or whether an average teen could easily bypass national blocks with VPNs or by other methods, Schmid became more vague.

“No, I don’t have a clear answer on how to master” more complex issues of age verification, he admitted.

Netzpolitik’s Sebastian Meineck, who has provided detailed reports of Schmid’s one-man War on Porn in Germany, reported that he “is currently in contact with colleagues in Cyprus, where xHamster is based, to discuss how to proceed,” after the tube site moved their content to a slightly different URL to sidestep the legal block.

Schmid, however, is undaunted by the prospect of an endless game of “whack-a-hamster.”

”It seems a bit Kafkaesque,” the man who was described as colleagues as having “a fetish for order” told Übermedien about his long-term mission. “And maybe it is in some ways.”

CockyBoys Debuts Finale of New Feature 'Game On'

NEW YORK — CockyBoys has released the climactic finale of its new feature “Game On,” filmed by Jake Jaxson and RJ Sebastian on location in Mexico, featuring Leo Grand and Leo Louis.

“In the ‘Game On’ series finale, financial machinations have come to fruition and the gaming company has new controlling interests and an unexpected new CEO,” a rep said. “Leo G and Leo L are spending more time together in the resort, leading Leo L to flirtatiously invite Leo G to his cabana.”

“The chemistry is off-the-charts between these two lions. As they lie together kissing, Leo G is totally removed from all the stress he was holding in. Who really is the ‘winner’ in the challenge offered by the late CEO to his friends and business partners? One person is particularly happy by the way everything has worked out,” added the rep.

Jaxson praised his cast and the experience of filming in Mexico.

“At the end of the day, the message in ‘Game On’ is whoever is happiest, wins! I hope everyone watching gets that in the midst of one of the hottest duo scenes we’ve released this year between the incredible Leo Grand and Leo Louis,” he said.

The release of “Game On” kicked off a yearlong “15 Years of CockyBoys” promo campaign celebrating the studio’s milestone anniversary.
