‘Being Black in Porn’ Wins ‘Best Documentary’ From ReelOut Fest

'Being Black in Porn' Wins 'Best Documentary' From ReelOut Fest

KINGSTON, Ontario — The ReelOut Film Festival has bestowed its “Best Documentary” award upon “Being Black in Porn,” the indie film centered on DeAngelo Jackson, Dillon Diaz, Rock Rockafella, Max Konnor and others.

Jackson also serves as narrator and executive producer. The film, directed by Dwight Allen O’Neal and produced by Mile High Media in association with Noir Male and Of The Clock Productions, follows the lives of four gay men of color as they navigate their way in a competitive and often complicated adult film industry.

“I want to thank everyone involved in this project and ReelOut for not only accepting our feature into their festival but awarding us ‘Best Documentary,’” O’Neal said. “This honor is especially impactful during Black History Month; we want to leave a lasting mark and start conversations with this documentary, delving into triggering topics [about] gay, BIPOC, sex workers. Our hope is that our documentary creates a better understanding of these men and sends a message to everyone that #BlackLivesMatter everywhere, in everything and within every industry.”

The film examines the unique experiences of the performers, including encounters with racism, such as being cast in servant roles or as thugs, noted a rep, and facing white performers who refuse to perform with them because of the color of their skin. O’Neal also tackles stereotypes, such Black talent expected to have large penises and made to bottom when they do not, and inequality, as Black actors report making less money than their white counterparts.

“This means the world to me. I’m humbled and grateful to ReelOut for this big win,” Jackson said.

“I appreciate everyone who was willing to go on camera and speak their truth for our documentary; it’s a story that needs to be shared,” he added. “I hope ‘Being Black in Porn’ continues to win accolades and is seen all over the world.”

Bankruptcy Trustee for GirlsDoPorn-Affiliated Paysite Sues Lawyers for Malpractice

SAN DIEGO — The bankruptcy trustee for Domi Publications, which operated MomPOV.com and was formerly co-owned by fugitive GirlsDoPorn owner Michael Pratt, has filed a legal malpractice suit against two attorneys for failing to reach a settlement with the 22 Jane Doe former models suing GDP in a civil trial.

Domi Publications was one of several entities, U.S. and foreign, once belonging wholly or in part to Pratt, according to filings in the parallel criminal trial where the GDP owner and associates were charged with human trafficking and sexual assault of some of the site’s models.

Until the civil trial, Domi was co-owned by Pratt and Doug Wiederhold, a webmaster and former male talent whom Pratt found in 2007 on Craigslist soon after emigrating from his native New Zealand to the U.S. to set up the GDP operation.

From 2007 to 2009, according to the Jane Does’ filing, “Wiederhold and Pratt traveled from city to city filming videos of amateur girls in hotel rooms across the United States.”

Wiederhold was replaced as the main GDP talent in 2011 by Ruben Andre Garcia, currently serving a 20-year sentence after pleading guilty to sex trafficking charges in 2020. A year before, Wiederhold and Pratt had created a spinoff MILF website called MomPOV, which continued operating from Las Vegas long after GDP went dark after the criminal charges were unveiled in 2019.

A day before the civil trial began in 2018, “Wiederhold and Pratt entered into a buyout agreement where Wiederhold bought Pratt’s 50% interest in Domi for $96,000,” Courthouse News reported yesterday.

Domi reportedly earned over $2 million in annual gross revenue in 2018 and 2019, but continued to be embroiled in the litigation affecting Pratt and GDP.

In 2020, after San Diego Superior Court Judge Kevin Enright awarded the Jane Does a total judgment of $21 million — including $13 million in damages, the rights to their videos, $8 million in attorneys’ fees and $781,000 in costs — Domi filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

But the Jane Does have not yet been able to collect on the damages and are named as creditors in Domi’s bankruptcy, filed in Nevada.

A Tangled Web of Companies and Lawsuits

According to yesterday’s report, Lenard Schwartzer, Chapter 7 trustee for Domi Publications, sued the company’s former attorneys, George Rikos and Clyde DeWitt, for legal malpractice over the events around Pratt’s divestment from the company in 2018.

The bankruptcy trustee, Courthouse News reported, now claims that “Rikos and DeWitt could have saved Domi from the $21 million bill had they settled with the women when given multiple opportunities to do so before and during the trial in fall 2019.”

According to Schwartzer’s 15-page complaint, “Rikos and DeWitt’s utter failure to fulfill their duties of care and act in Domi’s best interest resulted in a judgment against Domi for $21,396,478.16. In turn, Rikos and DeWitt’s failure to fulfill their duties caused Domi to lose its entire business, which had generated millions in profits since its inception.”

The bankruptcy trustee now alleges that as the civil trial was about to start, the Jane Does offered “to dismiss Domi from their case against GDP and waive costs and fees” and also “moved to sever their claims against Domi from the GDP case, which would have saved Domi immense legal fees and costs.”

Schwartzer claims that Rikos “declined the offer and opted to go to trial,” even though the models’ attorneys were willing to settle each individual Doe’s claim for $749 — one dollar less than the statutory minimum penalty automatically granted to a plaintiff who prevails on a misappropriation of likeness claim in California.”

Courthouse News tallied the total to settle all the Jane Does’ claims at $16,478.

Malpractice Allegations Over a Botched Settlement

The lawsuit also alleges that Wiederhold wanted to settle but Pratt did not, and Rikos and DeWitt “took no action to attempt to resolve the deadlock” between the partners, essentially “forcing Domi to remain in very costly and risky litigation.”

However, after Pratt sold his 50% to Wiederhold on the eve of the trial, the lawsuit alleges, “as part of the contract, Pratt advised it was his ‘desire’ for Wiederhold to reject the compromise offer by the Does and instead negotiate a ‘walk away’ in the first month of the trial. The ‘walk away’ agreement would have been filed under seal as opposed to the compromise offer by the Does.”

“Neither Rikos nor DeWitt took any action to negotiate a walk away agreement with the Jane Does once trial commenced,” Courthouse News reports about the lawsuit allegations. “Rikos later served an offer to settle if the Jane Does paid Domi and offered to have judgment issued in Domi’s favor. They declined.”

Jessy Jones Files $2M Defamation Lawsuit Against MJ Fresh, Hussie Models

LOS ANGELES — Veteran male talent Jessy Jones has filed a $2 million defamation lawsuit against performer MJ Fresh, her agency and her agent, Hussie Models owner Riley Reynolds, over an alleged incident after a content shoot last December.

The 10-page complaint was filed yesterday in Los Angeles by Jones’ attorney, Reza Sina of Burbank’s Sina Law Group.

Jones alleges that Fresh and Reynolds contacted him “as a favor, to do a free shoot” in early December 2021, in an effort “to boost their presence in the adult entertainment world, especially after MJ Fresh’s recent hiatus from the industry.”

The lawsuit claims that “what transpired after [the shoot] can only be characterized as one of the most disturbing character assassinations in history,” and details what Jones and his attorney call “a laundry list of lies and misrepresentations” which they claim falsely allege that Jones raped Fresh.

A few days after the shoot, Jones alleges, Fresh began what he calls “a campaign of threats and false allegations of rape” via Twitter, which he accuses Hussie and Reynolds of “ratifying.”

Jones also cites a Jan. 18 video by Fresh allegedly accusing him “of rape, numerous lies and other unlawful conduct.”

The following day, Jones alleges, “Reynolds and his agency, Hussie Models, ratified MJ Fresh’s conduct by blocking [Jones] to thwart [his] attempts at contacting them.”

Moreover, Jones alleges that “reckless and intentional conduct” by Fresh, Hussie Models and Reynolds has caused him “to lose many lucrative contracts and relationships.”

Jones alleges he “has suffered substantial damages, including economic harm (past and future income), severe emotional distress, humiliation, anxiety, worriedness and loss of sleep, all in in an amount to be determined at trial, but believed to be in excess of $2,000,000.”

XBIZ contacted Fresh’s agent and co-defendant Reynolds, who declined to comment.

Bustle Survey Explores Sex Content Potential of Metaverse

LOS ANGELES — Bustle published today a survey of several experts and sex workers about the potential for virtual adult content in the burgeoning metaverse.

To explore some of the forthcoming possibilities of the metaverse, the female-oriented news and trends site interviewed digital immersive environment pioneers like Second Life’s Philip Rosedale and RD Land’s Angelina Aleksandrovich as well as academics, journalists and sex workers.

Although writer Nona Willis Aronowitz acknowledged that, in practice, the metaverse “may end up being entangled in the same biases and dangers of our current reality,” she noted that in the best-case scenario it has the potential to be “an exciting frontier, both for our sexual imaginations and for the safety and de-stigmatizing of sex workers.”

The initial adoption phase of the technology — most visibly ballyhooed by notoriously sex-averse Mark Zuckerberg and his recently renamed Meta empire — might result in a promising “lag in regulating the sex work that happens in the metaverse,” Willis Aronowitz wrote. “Like earlier versions of the internet, more advanced VR platforms might enjoy a few years of the wild, wild west as legislators struggle to grapple with the changing landscape.”

Speculating that “sex work in a metaverse would simply be an expansion of the marketplace that already exists online,” the writer spoke to people with experience in other versions of online sex work, like former cam performer and current journalist and historian Noelle Perdue.

“Instead of doing custom content, people will create custom experiences,” Perdue told Bustle, describing a more immersive version of platforms where sex workers “can interact with [clients] on a subscriber basis, like OnlyFans or Pornhub Fan Club.”

Historical background was provided by Philip Rosedale, whose early 21st-century digital environment Second Life has been widely acknowledged as a relevant analog and precursor to the current metaverse.

“People were, from the very start, able to sell things to each other or pay for services,” Rosedale told Bustle. “And sex is one of the many services people pay for.”

“Virtual reality opens up so many exciting possibilities for exploring the more surreal elements of fetish and kink,” Perdue added. “There are a lot of fetishes that are not possible to recreate in real life, like a giantess fetish, or hypnotism, or more fantastical, niche desires. Virtual reality provides such an amazing opportunity to actually be in those fantasies in a way that you can’t in [reality].”

Sex worker and advocate Tamika Spellman, from Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive, emphasized that metaverse interactions have the potential to keep providers and creators safe, especially compared to in-person encounters. But Spellman also warned financial issues might act as gatekeeping factors.

“There are some [platforms] where you need to have a major credit card to pay for a space to advertise,” she noted. “Not everybody has that.”

Still, if the metaverse becomes the third coming of the internet as projected by Zuckerberg and other high-tech gurus, sex workers will probably find a way, the article stresses. “Sex work has been around since the Biblical times,” Spellman added. “It’s not going anywhere.”

Angelina Aleksandrovich, founder of sex-focused “multisensory metaverse” RD Land, projected a virtual space where “sex workers can jump into any kind of avatar that the client wants to play with; they can change the world on-demand, play out different scenarios that the clients want.”

For Perdue, the ideal scenario would be for the metaverse to “shake up” IRL stigma “as full-service becomes more normal in a virtual reality space.”
