‘Sex Tales’ Hosts Melody Kush, Lana Del Bae Talk Podcasting, Connecting With an Audience

LOS ANGELES — Chaturbate broadcasters Lana Del Bae and Melody Kush are back on the airwaves with the Season Two premiere of their “Camming Life” podcast “Sex Tales.”

The first episode features reigning XBIZ “Trans Performer of the Year” Casey Kisses, who stunned the XBIZ Awards audience when she took to the stage, dropped to one knee and proposed to her girlfriend, Kylie Le Beau.

The inaugural season of “Sex Tales” was a buzzy success, garnering over 150,000 views and downloads on the “Camming Life” YouTube channel. Ahead of Season Two’s debut, XBIZ spoke exclusively with the exuberant, upbeat Kush and newly crowned XBIZ “Cam Model of the Year” Del Bae about how they’ve grown as interviewers, their tips and tricks for top-notch podcasting and their favorite moments from Season One.

How would you describe your styles as an interviewer? Are you super-prepared, easygoing, a bit of both?

DEL BAE: I would say I’m a bit of both, for sure. I like to have all my facts and know interesting tidbits about the person I’m interviewing to show I took the time to do my research on them and their career. When it comes to filming, me and my lovely co-host Mel, of course, have a structure to our interview questions but both of us are very flexible on sidetracking if a fun unexpected story presents itself to us mid-interview.

KUSH: In life, I tend to be someone who is over-prepared for pretty much everything and I think that carries over to the way I mentally prepare for a podcast. Whenever we arrive “on set” it’s always chill and easygoing. Lana and I have a [meeting] before each episode to discuss our research, and it’s such a fun session! Depending on what type of guest we’re interviewing, we sometimes need to adapt our style from one episode to the next. It doesn’t really matter how much you prepare, the most successful podcasts are the ones that are more conversational. Overall,I’m a curious person and I love hearing about people’s experiences — and let’s face it, adult stars have some fucking great stories. I’m always so genuinely excited to hear what they have to say, and I always bring energy and enthusiasm to every show.

Now that Season Two is airing, how would you describe “Sex Tales” for a brand-new listener/viewer?

DEL BAE: A fun, sexy, and heartfelt podcast where you get a behind-the-scenes look at the adult industry and the stars that shape it into what it is.

KUSH: All those questions you’ve always wanted to ask an adult star? We get you those answers! I’d say it’s like watching adult star/cam besties chatting about what life in the adult industry is like, on-and-off-camera. Everything from career origins and crazy things that happen on set, to sex and relationship advice.

How have you both grown as interviewers over the first season?

DEL BAE: I like to think I’m a bit more of a confident interviewer than I was when I first started. I can be a bit of a perfectionist and I would get kind of nervous that I needed to say everything perfectly all the time and, ironically, that made me stumble over my words a bit. I think I’m more confident and comfortable now so I don’t have to overthink it as much and I think — I hope, anyway! — that makes me better.

KUSH: Our first interview was with Tera Patrick. Talk about a legend! I was terrified!! Lucky for us, Tera is such a cool human, her disarming personality immediately made me feel at ease. Every podcast after that got easier and easier. Each guest we have had on the show is so unique and brings something new to the table. I wholeheartedly look forward to every interview and I adore researching our guests who have all had such outstanding careers. The hunger to know more about our guests grows more and more with each guest we interview.

What is some advice you’d offer to newcomers who are getting into podcasting?

DEL BAE: If you are planning to interview guests on your podcast, go watch and listen to other interviews they have done in the past simply so you can understand their energy levels and personality. Some guests answer everything with a one- or two-word answer so you really have to bring them out of their shell, while others will elaborate on every detail! Understanding your guests’ pace beforehand will help you better structure the flow of the interview and it will be more enjoyable for listeners/viewers.

KUSH: The most important thing is to have fun! Fun is infectious, and your listener will hear that in your voice. It’s important to prepare, but even more important to bounce off your guest and feed your own curiosity by asking developing questions as they reveal more about themselves. The best way to get to know your guest is to listen to other podcasts they’ve done to get a feel for how they respond. Some people prefer giving short answers, while others are natural-born storytellers, and knowing this can help how you shape the interview overall. It’s also very important to respect your guest’s privacy. Have a conversation with your guest ahead of time so you don’t touch on any topics they may not want to discuss. And, of course, good audio and well-lit video for those doing video.

It seems like the skills for quality podcasting overlap with camming; do you find that to be true?

DEL BAE: Definitely! Being comfortable in front of a camera already is so helpful and being a chatty cam model, oh my gosh, helps 1,000%! I put the ‘chat’ in Chaturbate, if you know what I mean! And of course, it helps that we already have all the high-tech cameras and microphones so definitely a very easy crossover, for sure.

KUSH: Absolutely! Being able to carry a conversation with pretty much anyone is a skill that I mastered as a cam model. It also helps that cam makes us more comfortable in front of the camera since there is a visual component to “Sex Tales” as well. Not to mention we’re tech-savvy and have all the right equipment.

You had a wide range of guests last season, from Peppermint to Buck Angel, Sophie Dee to Dani Daniels and Kira Noir. What were some of your favorite moments from the first season?

DEL BAE: Honestly, I loved all of our guests last season I don’t think I could ever pick a favorite. I definitely did love interviewing Buck Angel; he was so down-to-earth and kind, my heart was so full the whole interview. And Kira Noir, oh my gosh! The sweetest human in the world. I was so happy to finally get to meet them in person at X3 Expo and the XBIZ Awards at the beginning of this year. I think my favorite moments from Season One were when our guests would open up and share silly stories from days on set or sentimental stories and wisdom they had learned over the years. Listening to their real-life stories and not just watching them on screen is what I think “Sex Tales” is all about. Humanizing and destigmatizing sex work.

KUSH: I think the interesting range of guests we had just made every interview so unique and fun. It’s really hard to pick out moments! Dani Daniels was an absolute riot; she has such an amazing sense of humor. Did you know she has her own line of BBQ rubs? Other great moments were learning how to squirt with Mary Moody, and Catjira accidentally turning on her Hitachi mid-interview; both of those interviews were like talking to my best friends about cam life. But if I had to choose a favorite interview, I’d probably say Buck Angel. So many fun elements to that podcast; he’s really had an interesting career and life journey. It’s not often that we have a show that evokes such strong emotion that our guest sheds a tear!

Anything else you’d like to tease about the new season?

DEL BAE: If you liked the first season, oh, baby, just you wait! Season Two is fire! I’m so beyond excited and humbled to be doing another season with my lovely co-host Melody and the incredible Chaturbate and Camming Life crews.

KUSH: I got to interview a performer I’ve always admired. This upcoming season has some of my favorite interviews to date, you’ll just have to tune in to see if you agree with me!

Adult Businesses, Sex Workers Again Put at Risk by EARN IT Act

WASHINGTON — Adult industry, sex worker and digital rights advocates unanimously sounded the alarm today about the nefarious implications for state censorship and privacy issues of the revived EARN IT Act, which was re-introduced yesterday by Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut).

The bill, which purportedly has as its goal to “protect victims and survivors of child sexual exploitation,” is in fact a broad overhaul of Section 230 protections — known by online rights advocates as the First Amendment of the internet — to strip platforms of immunity for third-party uploaded content.

As XBIZ has reported, EARN IT will also open the way for politicians to define the categories of “pornography” and “pornographic website” as they — or the lobbies that fund them — please, which is a cherished goal of organizations that seek to reintroduce obscenity prosecutions for content now protected by Free Speech jurisprudence.

EARN IT has been championed by top religiously motivated anti-porn crusading groups such as NCOSE (formerly Morality in Media) who reportedly received advance notice of its reintroduction yesterday.

“If you want to know just how bad the bill is,” tech news site TechDirt’s legal reporter Mike Masnick wrote today, “I found out about the re-introduction of the bill — before it was announced anywhere — via a press release sent to me by NCOSE,” which he described as “the busybody organization of prudes who believe that all pornography should be banned.”

NCOSE, Masnick added, “was also a driving force behind FOSTA, the dangerous law with many similarities to EARN IT that, as we predicted, did nothing to stop sex trafficking, and plenty of things to increase the problem of sex trafficking, while putting women in danger and making it more difficult for the police to actually stop trafficking.”

EARN IT Returns From Its Early Grave

The bill was initially introduced in 2020 as a partnership between Blumenthal and his South Carolina Republican colleague Lindsey Graham.

At the time Graham made explicit his relentless aim to censor adult content online, writing to a constituent in an email that XBIZ reviewed, “I have concerns about our children’s ability to access pornographic material through the internet and email. While I wholeheartedly support the First Amendment, I do not believe exposing young people to pornography is an acceptable exercise of freedom of speech.”

He added in Dec. 2020 that he will “continue to work with [his] colleagues in Congress to limit society’s exposure to inappropriate material.”

When the bipartisan effort was first unveiled and was loudly ballyhooed by both senators at the time of the last presidential campaign as a forceful anti-Big Tech measure, critics pointed out that besides its already controversial intended mission to erode, or even “repeal,” Section 230 protections, the bill would also crucially undermine privacy by targeting encryption.

As TechDirt’s Mike Masnick pointed out, corporate and intelligence complaints against the encryption-busting potential of EARN IT were so concerning that Blumenthal and Graham were eventually “persuaded to adopt an amendment from Senator Patrick Leahy to more explicitly attempt to exempt encryption from the bill, but it was done in a pretty weak manner.”

Then, in late 2020, Graham and a lame-duck-period Trump attempted to force Congress to pass EARN IT by bundling it with an unrelated bill, but that effort was thwarted at the last minute and the bill died for that congressional period.

But Blumenthal loudly announced yesterday that EARN IT is back on the table, and virtually unchanged from its previous incarnation, which had been opposed by most digital rights and privacy groups, and also by adult industry organizations and sex worker advocates.

FSC’s Stabile: ‘Potential to Devastate’ Sex Workers and Creators

The re-emergence of the bill generated enough concern to prompt Mike Stabile, Free Speech Coalition (FSC) director of public affairs, to tweet an urgent call to arms against what he calls “SESTA-FOSTA 2.0,” warning that “it’s back and the danger it poses to sex workers is more extreme than ever.”

Stabile urged members of the adult industry and sex workers to “get up to speed quick” on the implications of EARN IT for their livelihoods. “It’s got bipartisan support, a moral panic at their back and the potential to devastate the hard-fought gains of the sex work creator economy.”

Kate D’Adamo, a noted advocate for the rights of sex workers with nonprofit Reframe Health and Justice, added to the urgency by pointing out that EARN IT was reintroduced yesterday by Blumenthal with a media blitz about “child protections” and it is “already scheduled to get marked up, which is the first step post-introduction. Most bills never go to markup, so this means they are putting pressure to move this through.”

XBIZ spoke with Stabile today, who added that “the bill will lead to the type of wide-scale deplatforming of sex work and sexual speech that we saw after SESTA-FOSTA.”

“Were it to pass,” he emphasized, “we’d likely see most, if not all, adult content and accounts removed from mainstream platforms, for fear of the liability that could come with ever accidentally hosting CSAM, as well as the erasure of end-to-end encryption on messaging platforms.”

Blumenthal’s revived EARN IT Act, Stabile noted, “uses a moral panic to enact more surveillance, more discrimination and more censorship of sex workers.”

The ‘But the Children’ Excuse

Industry attorney and First Amendment expert Lawrence Walters, from the Walters Law Group, concurred that “this ill-conceived legislation threatens to decimate online freedom and eliminate the ability to communicate privately, without government surveillance.”

“Like other internet censorship legislation,” Walters continued, “this rebooted EARN IT act is being sold as a ‘child protection’ bill, in order to pressure lawmakers to vote for it without critical evaluation. In reality, the bill will intensify the harms caused by [SESTA/FOSTA], disproportionately impact LGBTQ individuals and target sexual education materials.”

Walters said that he nevertheless remains “hopeful that Congress will again reject EARN IT Act as a danger to expressive freedom and an infringement on the right to privacy.”

Mercedes Carrera Pretrial Date Postponed Again

Mercedes Carrera Pretrial Date Postponed Again

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — The pretrial hearing in the Mercedes Carrera criminal case concerning multiple child sexual abuse charges against Carrera and her husband — which was scheduled for last Friday at the Rancho Cucamonga courthouse in San Bernardino County, California — has been postponed once again, this time until Feb. 8.

Carrera and her husband, Jason Whitney, were arrested after a police raid of their Rancho Cucamonga home on Feb. 1, 2019. They have been in county jail without trial since then, first without bail and later, after they had liquidated their assets and had no source of income due to their incarceration, with bail set at $2 million for each.

A pretrial hearing to determine the jury selection process, and the date of the beginning of the actual trial, has already been postponed numerous times.

The new date of Feb. 8 — like several previous postponements — appeared in a document filed online.

The earliest date for the actual trial to begin has been set to late March, over three years after Carrera and her husband were arrested.

The document shows the hearing took place today with District Attorney Laura Fragoso and Carrera’s conflict panel attorney, Geoff Newman, standing for the accused. Carrera was in attendance.

New Article Probes Resurgence of Anti-Porn Feminism

NEW YORK — Prestigious fashion, art, photography and design journal Document published today an incisive article by writer Sophia Giovannitti examining the resurgence of anti-porn feminism in mainstream cultural discourse around sexual content.

In “The Resurgence of Anti-Porn Feminism,” Giovannitti makes the case that “the debate around sex work is really all about labor.”

To insist that sex “should be private and free when the conditions [of privacy-less, data-driven late capitalism] make such descriptors patently impossible,” she writes, “is to play into the impossible demands of patriarchal capitalism — the fallacy that we have on time and off time; work time and home time; internet time and private time; and that sex should always remain firmly in the latter, damned to invisible pockets of time that don’t, ultimately, exist.”

The author notes that “lately it feels like every time I open Twitter, I see a semi-viral tweet bravely decrying the evils of misogynistic or violent porn, drawing a direct causal line between the ubiquity of men watching pornography and the ubiquity of violence against women — as though the genre’s only relationship to women is interpersonal, mediated through the watching of porn by men.”

Giovannitti calls this discourse “exhaustingly one-note.”

“Any individual pretending to know that in every instance correlation is indeed causation — that pornography has an innate property ascribed to no other media, the power to give primarily men permission to behave badly in ways they otherwise wouldn’t, or wouldn’t with such frequency and zeal,” she points out, “is speaking with a certainty I can’t pretend to have”

Sex and Labor

Giovannitti points out that her “relationship to the aesthetics of sex is a peculiar one. I don’t make or sell porn, though I do other forms of work which involve presenting myself as sexually exceptional in a way that is legible to consumers of porn and the like. A lot of people I know sell porn. We speak about sexual labor the way we speak about other forms of labor: our annoyance at having to do it; trading tips and warnings; ‘Has anyone ever said this to you before?;’ showing one another nudes and clips and texts for the purposes of soliciting advice, compliments, or catharsis.”

Answering notable New York Times-endorsed SWERFs like Michelle Goldberg and much ballyhooed Oxford philosophy professor Amia Srinivasan, Giovannitti provides a fundamental reply to the question that their generalizing arguments so obviously beg: “Why do so many women make porn, after all, if porn is ostensibly so bad for women?

“People make porn to make money,” Giovannatti states. “Women make porn to make money. Making money and thus avoiding the perils of life with no money — lack of housing, food, healthcare, stability, anything else — supersedes the desire to avoid any other perils, like a changed relationship to one’s sex life.”

During the pandemic, she adds, “a lot of people would rather fuck their boyfriends or girlfriends on camera and sext with customers for tips, than host at a restaurant or do any other type of service work in which they’ll be badly treated, sexually harassed and paid a pathetic hourly wage.”
