Lifehacker Lists the Top 17 Titles From the ‘Golden Age of Porn’

Lifehacker Lists the Top 17 Titles From the 'Golden Age of Porn'

LOS ANGELES — Lifehacker has selected its 17 top titles from the “Golden Age of Porn,” many of which have been recently remastered and made available for online streaming for the first time.

Lifehacker editor Claire Lower compiled the list, which includes both undebatable classics such as “The Opening of Misty Beethoven,” “Dracula Sucks,” and “The Devil in Miss Jones,” as well as deeper cuts like “The Seduction of Lynn Carter,” “Mascara,” “Angel on Fire,” and Seka’s “Tara Tara Tara Tara.”

“My fascination with Golden Age pornography pre-dates the pandemic,” said Lower, who also started collecting vintage porn posters during the last year. I read [adult industry oral history] ‘The Other Hollywood’ a couple of years ago, and have been a fan of ‘The Rialto Report’ podcast for at least that long, but it would be untrue to say that my interest is purely academic.

While Lower admitted she finds the history of Golden Age pornography “fascinating,” it is also the porn she “prefers to watch.”

Lower provides highly personal, engaging descriptions of her film-era “Top 17,” which now can be enjoyed in much-better-than-VHS quality thanks to the archival efforts of revival outfits like Vinegar Syndrome.

As XBIZ reported, the digitally remastered resurrection of many Golden Age adult titles (covering roughly the 1970s to the ’90s) has resulted in mainstream VOD services like HotMovies striking deals with restoration houses and cult-movie distributors; likewise, indie powerhouses like Pink & White Productions’ streaming service PinkLabel.tv have renewed interest in LGBT erotic classics.

Recently, Popular cinephile social network Letterboxd added a “curated” selection of adult films to their database, including several of the titles mentioned by Lifehacker.

‘Fight For The Future’ Endorses #AcceptanceMatters Campaign

'Fight For The Future' Endorses #AcceptanceMatters Campaign

BOSTON — Digital rights organization Fight For the Future (FFTF) has endorsed the #AcceptanceMatters campaign against banking discrimination, spearheaded by LGBTQ+ sex workers, in the wake of Mastercard’s new rules for online content.

As XBIZ reported, a group of national and local sex worker collectives led by LGBTQ+ activists in the community, launched the #AcceptanceMatters campaign in September.

The group demanded “an immediate pause on Mastercard’s new planned adult content policies pending the creation of stakeholder advisory councils, and to protest ongoing discrimination from the banking industry.”

The new rules are scheduled to be implemented on October 15.

“Mastercard can’t declare that ‘acceptance matters’ while actively discriminating against and endangering sex workers and vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community,” stated FFTF director Evan Greer. “We need community-driven solutions to address exploitation and harm, not more surveillance, financial de-platforming, or online censorship of vaguely defined sexual content, which can include artwork, health and educational materials, and more.”

Greer added that, while her group urges Mastercard to abandon this plan, “everyone should fight for decentralized alternatives so that payment processing does not continue to be a convenient chokepoint for censorship and human rights abuses.”

“Instead of allowing private corporations to further restrict basic rights and safety for sex workers, we should push Congress to pass the Safe Sex Worker Study Act, to examine the harm done by SESTA/FOSTA and recommend policies that will increase safety for all,” Greer noted.

FFTF describes itself as “a group of artists, engineers, activists and technologists” whose mission is “to channel internet outrage into political power to win public interest victories previously thought to be impossible.”

Luxxxe Studios Wraps 1st Scene, ‘Friends in Heat’

LOS ANGELES — Newly formed Luxxxe Studios has wrapped production on its very first scene, titled “Friends in Heat,” starring Brian Bonds and studio exclusive Justin Yurmouth.

“I can’t begin to tell you how proud I was to have an amazing team working on my first scene for Luxxxe. Both Brian and Justin nailed it and even surpassed my expectations. I was so impressed by their stellar performances,” Founder and CEO JD Daniels said.

“The scene was so hot and steamy you can feel the chemistry and hunger they had for each other; it was that good, direct and realistic,” he added.

The tryst was filmed and photographed by Anthony Duran and Jasun Mark, whom Daniels described as “a joy and a lot of fun.”

Mark praised his experience with the nascent brand.

“It’s always very exciting to help new studios find their artistic vision and help them create their first scenes. Doing it with Anthony was even more fun. He and I have been working together since 2009, so it was both old and new,” Mark said. “JD’s excitement and enthusiasm were very refreshing, but I was also impressed with his attention to detail and how he wanted the scenes to look and feel. He didn’t just walk on set thinking, ‘Let’s make a porn.’ He did a lot of planning and learning about what he wanted the final product to look like.”

“And of course, Brian is an old friend I love shooting. And having my first shoot with Justin was equally fun,” Mark added. “Can’t wait to see where this all goes.”

Duran added, “It was a pleasure working with such a great team at Luxxxe. Beautiful location and perfect casting.”

The swordsmen echoed the enthusiasm of the group.

“Brian and I had so much chemistry, and both Jasun and Anthony captured it beautifully. I’m really impressed with the results,” Yurmouth said. “JD had a very strong vision for this scene and it paid off in a huge way.”

Bonds noted he is proud to have been part of Daniels’ first shoot for his own company.

“It’s a huge deal and I’m proud of him for taking the steps. He did a very good job with all the booking responsibilities,” Bonds added. “I always love working with Anthony and Jasun. They always make me comfortable while on set. Having known Justin for years, and worked together with him, I’m grateful to have had such an amazing scene partner.”

“Friends is Heat” is expected to be released in early 2022 with the web launch of Luxxxe Studios.

Indiana-Based Ministry Offers ‘Friendship’ to Adult Entertainers

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana-based religious ministry Unconditional — which has targeted sex workers as potential converts since 2012 — is rebranding its messaging as an offer of “friendship” for “adult entertainers.”

Interviewed by the Greenfield, Indiana Daily Reporter this week, Unconditional’s CEO struck an inclusive, non-judgmental note about the group’s proselytizing work among local sex workers.

“Once a month, Sarah Daniel and a group of volunteers visit local strip clubs with gift bags in hand,” the Daily Reporter’s writer began. “Each bag contains a card with contact information for finding additional support.”

Describing her journey from self-described “self-righteous jerk” to recognizing sex workers as fellow human beings — if potentially in need of her help — Daniel told the paper that when she was in college, “God really started to work on [her].”

“I started to volunteer at The Boys and Girls Club,” she added, “and I had several kids I worked with whose mothers worked in the industry. At first, I was very judgmental of them. And then God showed me, those moms are just these kids grown up. How am I going to sit here and judge them, but love their kids?”

‘It’s Complicated’

After a stint as a missionary in South Central Los Angeles, where she witnessed makeshift church services being conducted, Daniel said she “fell in love with the idea of showing people love right where they are. It also showed me the deep pain the church has caused to so many through judgment and harshness instead of compassion and love. It’s hard to unlearn, but slowly God has shown me to see people how he does.”

“I’ve never been a sex worker,” Daniel admitted. “But I do know what it’s like to mistrust Christians, to question God and to know pain,” she added, noting that some of her closest friends are “women I’ve met in the clubs.”

Having reached an ambivalence about sex walkers who earn a living by exotic dancing (“a strip club can save someone’s life, while simultaneously ruin their life”), Daniel coined her organization’s motto as “It’s complicated,” which doubles as the name of her podcast.

“Most of all, we offer unconditional friendship and support,” Daniel emphasized. “Our mission is to encourage, empower and equip women in the adult entertainment and sex industries.”

Pleasers, Workwear and Stilettos

Although Daniel is currently claiming that the organization does not aim to make sex workers quit, a 2019 report about her ministry by the local ABC station most definitely emphasized the “savior” angle.

“Leaving the sex trade industry can be extremely challenging, but a new partnership in the community is providing support to women who have decided to get out,” said WRTV’s Stephanie Wade, quoting “a woman — who we won’t identify” as stating, “I felt like I was drowning and I didn’t know how to get out.”

At the time, Daniel was trying to convince converts to go from wearing stripper shoes — a sparkly pleaser is the main image on the group’s outreach website — to becoming garment industry workers.

“Unconditional Ministries is partnering with Trace Fashion, a sustainable fashion company that creates comfortable workwear for women,” WRTV’s 2019 report continued. “The partnership will help provide more job opportunities for those who have decided to step away from the industry.”

This week’s Daily Reporter feature — headlined, “‘Showing people love right where they are’: Group offers friendship to adult entertainment workers” — was timed ahead of upcoming event, “Stiletto Stories,” described as Unconditional’s “annual vision night.”

APAG President: ‘Hard Not to Be Frustrated’

Alana Evans, President of the APAG (Adult Performance Artists Guild) union told XBIZ that religiously motivated people like Daniel should be “supporting existing sex worker organizations” instead of offering “friendship.”

“Churches need to worry about their parishioners,” Evans continued. “Roads like this all lead to donations for churches, instead of the organizations that really need it. These people are inserting themselves into peoples lives without being asked.”

Evans, a sex worker and adult performer herself who has been organizing for years, finds it hard “not to be frustrated with people like this, because while they have good intentions, they are continuing the path of judgment suggesting that we live lives of pain and that sex work ruins our life in the same sentence.”

The Daily Reporter story, Evans continued, “is so full of contradictions.”

“What concerns me the most is the fact that they’re placing themselves in these women’s homes by offering domestic help,” she added. “Cleaning and cooking is not something an organization that’s working to help women in need should be doing. It is far too invasive. The church does not need to be in the homes of sex workers.”

Evans criticized the strategy of ministries who “show up at strip clubs offering trinkets and goodies just to get their hands on the women working there, treating them all as if they’re victims.”

“You don’t show up to a tax accountants office, offering her little trinkets and goodies, why assume sex workers need this?” she concluded.
