‘Cash-Strapped’ U of Wisconsin Spent Over $130K Investigating Joe Gow

LA CROSSE, Wis. — The Universities of Wisconsin reportedly spent over $130,000 investigating recently terminated communications professor and former Chancellor Joe Gow for creating and appearing in adult content.

An invoice provided by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), an organization that assisted in Gow’s legal defense, shows that the UW system paid legal firm Husch Blackwell $133,365.75 “for professional services rendered and costs advanced through April 30, 2024.”

Husch Blackwell was engaged by the Universities of Wisconsin to investigate allegations of misconduct against Gow, according to the invoice.

The document goes on to detail the specifics of the investigation, which included analysis of documents, books, social media and videos — presumably including Gow’s amateur pornography — as well as witness interviews and forensic review of multiple electronic devices.

The money, which ultimately comes from Wisconsin taxpayers, was spent at the same time that the university system was preparing to ask Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers for nearly a billion dollars in state funding, according to an August AP report.

“Universities of Wisconsin regents agreed overwhelmingly on Aug. 22 to ask Gov. Tony Evers for an additional $855 million for the cash-strapped system in the 2025-27 state budget,” the report says.

As XBIZ reported last month, Gow was first fired as chancellor, and later, following a hearing, stripped of his tenure and terminated, for posting adult videos with his wife on an OnlyFans account.

FIRE Faculty Legal Defense Counsel Zach Greenberg expressed dismay at a public university spending such a large amount on investigating Gow’s activities in the midst of crying poverty.

“Professor Gow’s pornography remains protected by the First Amendment and should never have prompted a misconduct investigation,” Greenberg said. “Wisconsin taxpayers should be outraged that their money is being wasted on witch hunts. Even one dollar is too much to spend on censorship.”

In an exclusive interview with XBIZ on the day he was formally fired, Gow emphasized the political and fiscal calculations behind his termination.

“What we’re seeing here today is the system president and the Board of Regents saying, ‘We don’t want to get a lot of grief from the far right, because we want to get our funding. So let’s just fire this guy entirely and risk a lawsuit, but we’ll do what the politicians want.’”

Sexpo Australia Canceled as Parent Company Pursued by Creditors

SYDNEY — Sexpo Australia has reportedly been canceled following the collapse of its parent company, Australian Exhibition Group Pty. Ltd. (AEG).

In August, a creditor filed an application with the Supreme Court of Victoria for a Winding Up Order against AEG, which is a legal request to shut down a company due to unpaid debts.

The matter was heard on Sept. 23, and that same day, AEG informed interested parties that the upcoming Australian events, including the Oct. 4-6 Adelaide expo, were postponed indefinitely.

“The company has begun the process of entering into administration as the deadlock and legal fees make it impossible for the business to continue operating,” the company told exhibitors.

Sexpo founder David Ross, who sold the company to AEG in 2019, expressed his dismay at the situation.

“After the 2019 sale of Sexpo Australia to Australian Exhibition Group Pty. Ltd., I no longer have any interest in the local event, but still, it’s a crying shame to see what’s happened to my baby,” he said, adding, “I have received numerous phone calls from disgruntled exhibitors, telling me that Sexpo Australia (AEG) was still sending out invoices and reminders, and accepting payments until at least midday on Sept. 23, just hours before the postponement notice was sent.”

Maxine Fensom, owner of the affiliated Sexpo U.S.A., clarified that her organization is not connected to AEG but noted similar complaints from Australian exhibitors.

“The action against Australian Exhibition Group Pty. Ltd. (AEG) has no effect on Sexpo U.S.A. operations as AEG has no interest in the U.S.A. Sexpo trademark,” she said. “Exhibitors and the public are equally disgruntled due to the last-minute nature of the cancellation, and the lack of communication from Sexpo Australia’s management, leaving them out of pocket for all the expenses associated with traveling to and exhibiting at a major event.

“The brand may now be too damaged to consider buying the trademark, but the name of the event is less important than giving the public what they want from an adult exhibition, so we are also considering launching under another name.”

Ross agreed that he hopes to move forward with a similar event.

“I have a very good reputation amongst Sexpo exhibitors and so the fact that the local brand is now tarnished, it may be that the Australian trademark is worth nothing, except, possibly, to Maxine and myself,” he said. “In fact, I have been contacted by several affected exhibitors asking if I have any intentions to launch a new event, stating they would be happy to be involved.

“We are currently seeking expressions of interest from potential investors to launch a new event.”

South Dakota Lawmaker Vows to Revisit Age Verification Bill in 2025

PIERRE, S.D. — A South Dakota state representative has vowed to reintroduce legislation in the 2025 session that would impose age verification restrictions on adult websites.

Representative Bethany Soye, R-Sioux Falls, is leading a group of lawmakers pushing for a vote on a revised bill, after House Bill 1257 was killed by the state Senate in March over concerns about its constitutionality, as well as technical and enforcement issues.

“The pornography industry is not welcome here in South Dakota to prey on our children,” said Soye. “Their innocence is not for sale. We must protect our kids, and I urge my colleagues to stand with me.”

The revised legislation, which applies to sites that “create, host, or make available material harmful to minors,” would require sites to impose strict age verification processes, including the use of government identification.

It would also impose criminal penalties for noncompliance, with sites receiving one written warning before prosecution.

The revised bill still faces opposition in the state Senate, with Sen. Helene Duhamel, R-Rapid City, expressing concerns over the enforceability of the legislation as well as its potential financial burden on the state.

“We do not want South Dakota taxpayer dollars awarded to pornographers by a judge because we passed a bad law,” said Duhamel, who chairs the subcommittee on protecting minors from harmful content. “And we do not want to give any of these sketchy companies access to state databases for their age verification.”

However, South Dakota’s Republican attorney general, Marty Jackley, has voiced his backing for age verification restrictions.

“I support age verification for illicit websites,” he stated.

“Illicit” means “against the law,” suggesting that Jackley may be unaware that adult websites are legal in South Dakota and every other U.S. state, as protected speech under the First Amendment.

Jackley received a law degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law.

In justifying her position, Soye, who serves on the legislature’s Summer Study Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Internet Regulation for Minors, cited spurious psychological claims that pornography is damaging.

“It’s time for us to stop playing political games and pass this bill to protect our children from the harms of pornography,” she said. “We know that pornography damages young minds, leading to lifelong emotional and psychological harm.”
