FSC Meets With UK Baroness in Charge of Tory Government’s Porn Review

LONDON — Free Speech Coalition (FSC) has met with Baroness Gabrielle Bertin, the member of the House of Lords charged by the U.K. government with conducting a full review of the country’s pornography laws.

Free Speech Coalition and a group of sex workers, producers and industry advocates met with UK Baroness Gabrielle Bertin, the member of the House of Lords charged with conducting a full review of the country’s pornography laws. Baroness Burton reached out to FSC Executive Director Alison Boden in January, asking if the organization would participate in a discussion as part of the government’s Independent Pornography Review.

The Review’s Call for Evidence — a request for stakeholders to weigh in — says it seeks “to shed light on the associations between the pornography industry and the abuse, exploitation and trafficking that may pervade it.”

During the meeting, FSC implored the Review to focus on facts, not headlines. We challenged assumptions made suggesting that the adult industry was engaged in illegal activity, or that illegal content — such as revenge porn and CSAM — was tolerated or permitted on adult platforms. Most of all, we pressed for on-going discussions with workers and other stakeholders in the industry.

FSC was joined at the roundtable by representatives of Sex Workers Union, Adult Industry Association (AIA), UK Adult Producers (UKAP), Pineapple Support, and obscenity lawyer Miles Jackman, among others. We look forward to continuing the discussion with our allies, partners and the members of the Review team.

“While we’re certainly wary of the way the debate is being framed, it’s crucial to have a seat at the table,” says Boden. “We were glad to be invited and given the opportunity to contest misinformation and bad policy, it allows us to push for greater transparency and inclusion. We only lose by being silent.”

NiteFlirt Joins Free Speech Coalition as Sponsor

LOS ANGELES — Phone sex service NiteFlirt has joined the Free Speech Coalition (FSC) as a Silver-level sponsor.

“NiteFlirt’s membership will help enable FSC’s fight against censorship of adult content and discrimination against adult businesses and workers,” said a rep.

NiteFlirt Vice President of Customer Relations Erin Martinez enthused about sponsoring FSC.

“At NiteFlirt, we know the power of a voice,” Martinez said. “Speaking out is the first step in changing your reality, and we’re proud of the work that FSC has been doing in Congress, in the courts, and in the press. NiteFlirt is proud to announce our support of the FSC and its fight for the rights that keep the adult industry thriving.”

Added FSC Executive Director Alison Boden, “Phone sex and adult chat are a critical piece of the adult creator economy, and I’m glad to have NiteFlirt by our side in the fight against discriminatory legislation and regulation. NiteFlirt’s generous support will help us invest more resources in making sure our industry’s voice is heard globally.”

FSC Publishes Guide on How to Navigate New FinCEN Reporting Requirements

LOS ANGELES — Free Speech Coalition has published a guide for members on how to navigate the new reporting requirements implemented by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

As of January 1st, 2024, the United States Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has implemented new reporting requirements aimed at combating financial crimes. The Free Speech Coalition encourages its members who own businesses to ensure compliance with these regulations. Here’s what you’ll need to know to navigate FinCEN’s new beneficial ownership information reporting requirements.

Understanding the Reporting Requirements: Who Does This Apply to?

These reporting requirements primarily concern companies doing business in the United States, including those owned by members of the Free Speech Coalition. The FinCEN Small Entities Compliance Guide outlines which companies are required to report and which companies are exempt. To determine whether the requirements apply to you, refer to the chart below, which is also listed on page 9 of the Small Entities Compliance Guide.

If your company is a reporting company, your next step is to identify its beneficial owners. A beneficial owner is any individual who, directly or indirectly, exercises substantial control over a company or owns or controls at least 25 percent of its ownership interests. Companies are required to identify and report all owners and beneficiaries.

How to Report:

Reporting companies must file their reports electronically through the FinCEN secure filing system, which is available as of January 1, 2024. FinCEN has published instructions and technical guidance on how to complete the report form on their website. If a reporting company is unable to file electronically, they should contact FinCEN for assistance. You also have the option to create a FinCEN ID.

What You Need to Report:

Reporting companies must provide specific information about each beneficial owner, including their name, date of birth, address, and identifying number and issuer from an accepted identification document. Additionally, information about the company itself, such as its name and address, must be submitted.

Deadlines for Reporting Requirements

For existing companies, the deadline for filing initial reports is January 1, 2025. New companies created or registered in 2024 must file within 90 calendar days after their creation or registration.

Useful Resources for Compliance:

FinCEN provides various resources to facilitate compliance, including a Small Entity Compliance Guide, informational videos, webinars, an FAQ and a contact center. These resources can be accessed on the FinCEN website.

For more detailed information and frequently asked questions, you can refer to FinCEN’s informational brochure here.

Canada: Age Verification of Adult Content Becomes Election Issue

Canada: Age Verification of Adult Content Becomes Election Issue

SYDNEY, Nova Scotia — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week criticized Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre for stating that if he is elected prime minister, his government will require age verification for adult content.

Poilievre’s comments regarding implementing an age verification system, which echo proposals by anti-porn religious conservatives in the U.S., were widely reported by media outlets. On Wednesday, when asked whether a governing Conservative Party would require some form of age verification, Poilievre simply said “yes.”

The debate over age verification in Canada currently involves S-210, a bill introduced by Canada’s top anti-pornography activist, Senator Julie Miville-Dechêne, who was appointed to fill a vacancy in the Canadian Senate rather than elected to the post. The bill would require an unspecified age verification method for adult websites, and would hold sites criminally liable if they fail to check a user’s age.

At an event in Cape Breton on Thursday, Trudeau criticized the opposition leader for “proposing that adults should have to give their ID and personal information to sketchy websites, or create a digital ID for adults to be able to browse the web where they want,” the CBC reported.

“That’s something we stand against,” Trudeau stated unequivocally.

To confuse matters, following Poilievre’s remarks, one of his spokespeople seemingly contradicted his statement, telling the CBC that the Conservative party “does not support requiring users to verify their age through a digital ID.”

The back-and-forth between the leaders of Canada’s two main parties comes in the wake of Trudeau announcing that the government’s forthcoming Online Harms Bill, meant to combat hate speech, terrorist content and some violent material on the internet, could come up for consideration as soon as next week.

Tantus to Debut New Products at Altitude Intimates Next Week

LAS VEGAS — Tantus will introduce new products next week at the 2024 Altitude show.

Tantus’ four product displays will be showcased in the exhibitor booths of its distributors at the event, and will be tailored to reflect the brand’s bestsellers and the products on which it is focusing in 2024.

Director of Sales and Marketing Cheri Curry described Altitude as a very important show for Tantus.

“At this show, our focus is to thoroughly support our distribution partners and their investment in Tantus,” Curry said. “We’ve had pre-show Zoom meetings with reps to discuss the curated displays we created for each distributor, as well as a highly successful Facebook Live event where industry retailers had the opportunity to ask their questions about Tantus directly. I am genuinely thrilled to engage with our distributors’ sales teams as well, to learn from their experiences as well as their challenges, and explore how I can contribute to their success.”

The collaborative effort, Curry added, “ensures that Tantus remains not just a brand, but a valuable partner with products that resonate in stores. Furthermore, at this year’s event, which falls on the 25th year since Tantus’ founding, we are really going to be embodying our ethos of ‘Meeting You Where You Play.’”

Throughout the past year, she noted, the company concentrated on substantial investments in R&D and manufacturing quality control.

“Additionally, we’ve strengthened our range of silicone products with colorways that do justice to the thoughtfully designed shapes and feels of the products, which makes them stand out on retail shelves,” Curry said. “In addition to our bestsellers and new colorways, we will also highlight our bestsellers in both the kink and anal categories, as we expand Tantus’ position in these growing verticals. This year’s Altitude show will be a perfect opportunity for us to reinforce our dedication to our partners’ success, mirroring the dedication evident in the quality and design of our products. We can’t wait to see everyone there!”
