Chinese Tech Mogul Held by Authorities Over Alleged Adult Content on Video Platform

BEIJING — Chen Shaojie, founder and CEO of DouYu — China’s leading video streaming platform — is being held by Chinese authorities over supposed “pornographic content” on the site.

Chen’s whereabouts had been a mistery for weeks until Monday, when anonymous sources unofficially told the Chinese press that he was being held somewhere in the country’s labyrinthine prison system.

A few months ago, China’s all-powerful internet watchdog, the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission (aka, Cyberspace Administration of China, or CAC), launched an on-site inspection of the DouYu’s local subsidiary in the Hubei province “to address ‘serious’ problems, including pornography,” the English-language South China Morning Post reported.

DouYu — a massive, China-based analog to YouTube — is the largest of its kind in the country, boasting 163.6 million monthly active users before the pandemic and outnumbering platforms by competitors such as DouYin, the flagship product by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance.

Several weeks ago, following the Hubei branch inspection, Chen had “vanished from sight and could neither be contacted nor located by his colleagues,” local news reported.

DouYu told the press “its operations remain normal, but did not comment on its missing chief executive.”

Reports about Chen, the tech mogul behind the Tencent Holdings-backed DouYu International Holdings, confirm he is being held “incommunicado” by Chinese authorities.

“When someone becomes incommunicado in mainland China, it typically means that the person has either been taken away by authorities for an inquiry or ‘to assist in an investigation,’” the South China Morning Post explained. “In Chen’s case, no Chinese authority has provided any information about his disappearance.”

Chen’s last public appearance was in August, during DouYu’s second-quarter results conference call.

‘Providing Easy Access to Pornography’

Another tech mogul, China Renaissance Holdings chairman Bao Fan was seized by authorities earlier this year in an unspecified investigation. “Authorities have not provided further details about Bao’s situation,” the South China Morning Post offered.

Chen’s disappearance comes several months after China’s internet watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), launched a rare on-site inspection of DouYu’s local arm in central Hubei province to address “serious” problems related to the platform, including pornography and other vulgar content.

CAC did not release information about the results of the inspection or subsequent action as part of rectification measures.

The current case echoes a 2016 investigation, when video streaming pioneer Wang Xin, “was sentenced to a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence and fined one million yuan by the Beijing Haidian District People’s Court, which found him guilty of ‘distributing obscene materials for personal gain.’”

The government charged Wang’s with “providing easy access to pornography” through his platform.

The weaponization of obscenity laws against tech companies and moguls over third party content published in platforms, and against other politically controversial individuals, has been routine in totalitarian regimes worldwide.

In the U.S., Section 230 shields tech companies from liability over third party content, and discourages the abuse by the State of sensational sex-related accusations to target companies and individuals.

Biblically Inspired Alabama Legislator to Introduce Copycat Anti-Porn Legislation

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A religious conservative lawmaker in Alabama revealed Monday that she intends to introduce a copycat age verification bill as soon as the state legislature’s 2024 session begins.

State Rep. Susan DuBose (R-Hoover) — who prior to being elected declared to the Birmingham Christian Family magazine that her Biblical worldview would guide her decision making — told Alabama Daily News that her version of other Republican-majority states’ age verification laws will be “a porn ID law.”

DuBose said her bill would be “similar to a bill approved this year by Louisiana lawmakers, which would fine pornographic websites up to $5,000 a day for not verifying the age of its users through a process that requires the submission of a photo ID.”

As XBIZ has been reporting, leading conservative anti-porn crusaders have admitted that the state-by-state age verification laws are merely a stepping stone in an organized effort to ban all adult content online and revive obscenity prosecutions.

DuBose, however, claimed to have been motivated by speaking to parents and grandparents concerned “about their 10 to 12-year-old boys because they’re so engaged in their computers,” and asserted that most children in that age group have already seen porn on the internet.

“It’s damaging and addictive to young minds,” said DuBose, who before entering politics was a homemaker with no scientific background in mental health or brain science.

DuBose also stated, without providing evidence, that access to online adult material is “one reason we see so many females thinking that they are transgender.” She told Alabama Daily News that she will also reintroduce the transphobic What Is a Woman Act, which would legally codify definitions of “men” and “women” based solely on biological sex determined at birth.

“My faith impacts everything in my life,” she told the Birmingham Christian Family magazine in 2022. “It is my moral compass. It gives me the strength to make the right choices when so much of the world is pulling in the other direction. Every type of decision you make, you can go back to the Bible and the answer is there.”

Another conservative politician, Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) told the Alabama Daily News that he is working on a parallel project in the Senate.

“Just like young people are prohibited from purchasing pornographic magazines in retail stores, they also shouldn’t be able to access it online,” Orr said. “And currently, we have no prohibitions in effect to prohibit such activity.”

Nicole Kitt Basks in Limelight as Award-Winning Actress

Growing up in Oklahoma with a very conservative family that held traditional Christian values meant that Nicole Kitt was sheltered from various forms of music and media. Only in recent years was she able to watch “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars,” after which she made sure to call her parents and playfully tease them about that taste of forbidden fruit.

But before she truly went full-blown liberty-loving rebel with a career in the adult industry, she held a position as the operations manager for a major telecommunications company. On the side, to keep things interesting and make more money, she moonlighted as a go-go dancer.

“Back then, I used to say that ‘I work during the week for my weekend job,’” she reflects. “Eventually, I started networking and branching out into other forms of dance like traditional vintage burlesque. A great example of this style is Dita Von Teese. I immediately fell in love. At that point I was working to fund the very expensive hobby of burlesque.”

Amid the backdrop of sensual excitement and personal expression with abandon, her telecommunications job became increasingly boring by comparison. Seeking some sense of adventure, once the pandemic hit, she opened the Pandora’s box of porn, which she had always found fascinating and mysterious.

“I had to know more,” Kitt shares. “I wanted to know what happened behind the scenes and it turned into a sport researching it.”

After doing weeks of research, she saw that many performers shooting for studios work under the guidance of an agency. After a frustrating day at work she decided to at least apply, since there was no need for a commitment.

“Next thing I knew, I was being called left and right,” she recalls. “Speaking with Sandra at OC Modeling was the hook and sinker. I loved the idea of being represented by a woman and she was obviously about her business. I walked into the office, quit my job and drove 20 hours to LA. The rest is history!”

The rest is history indeed, as Kitt would go on to win Best Acting at the 2023 XBIZ Europas for her lead role in Feature Movie of the Year winner “The Wedding” from Lust Cinema, as over a thousand industry peers cheered her on.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned over the years is to be authentic to yourself,” she notes. “I’ve had the privilege to shoot various fun and exciting scenes but they didn’t always make me feel ‘accomplished’ at the end of the day. Sex and looking hot on camera isn’t enough for me. I need something challenging that stimulates my mind.”

To ensure she feels that sense of achievement, she has become very selective with the scenes she decides to do. And when she is not doing studio-shot work, she maintains a presence on her premium social media platform with independent content.

“I’ve found that using a daily planner helps me keep track of all of my to-dos and leaves time for myself most importantly,” Kitt says. “If I plan things out too far, I often get discouraged. The key is setting flexible goals and adjusting towards your mood. I’m also currently working on launching a brand as a passion project. At this point it’s a secret and the idea is that no one will ever know I’m behind it. This has consumed a majority of my time.”

While she juggles shoots with indie content and her secret project, Kitt has found that the best approach to keeping fans engaged online is interacting as much as possible and building a genuine friendship. As well, posting consistently has proven key for her.

She also makes time to hone her acting skills.

“I grew up being involved in performing arts but never in my mind did I think ‘I’m going to be an actor,’” she admits. “I always was quiet and observant as a child into my adult years. Whenever I’d watch a movie I’d find myself critiquing the actors and rewinding scenes to try it myself. I earned the nickname mockingbird from that little habit and, of course, to my family’s dismay.

“Then, throughout the day, I would encapsulate that character and play them in real life,” she continues. “It wasn’t until Inka Winters asked me to audition for ‘Ashford Manor’ that I realized just how much I loved acting and how it made me feel performing. Acting has become life and expression for me.”

She also enjoyed shooting “The Wedding” with Erika Lust, finding it to be a life-changing experience that felt natural and fluid. Kitt compared the set to a well-oiled machine where everyone worked and moved in sync.

“You could tell we all wanted the project to be great, so therefore it was,” she says. “Winning Best Acting at the 2023 XBIZ Europa Awards put things into perspective for me. Before the show and during the conference I kept saying ‘if I’m meant to act professionally, I’ll win.’

“So as you can imagine, when I heard my name being called, I nearly broke down,” she adds. “I kept thinking this is what I’m supposed to do and this is where I’m supposed to be. It was a testament for the many things to come and was a very personal moment for me.”

When she takes a break from acting in award-winning films and making her own content, Kitt is fond of skiing and sailing throughout the year.

“Whistler in Canada is the best if you’re looking for breathtaking ski runs,” she recommends. “In between those seasonal months, you’ll most likely see me posting on the race car track practicing. I’m every wild man’s dream as my mother would say.”

Now, her long-term goals are crystallizing into a clear picture, aiming in one definite direction. Namely, Kitt wishes to make a full crossover from adult into mainstream.

“It’s been done before, but my goals include being recognized internationally as a serious actress and most importantly a talented actress,” she says.

“This takes time and years of study, but I believe it’s something I can and will do. If I can win Best Acting from my second lead role in one of the biggest productions in adult industry history then I’m off to a great start! Personal goals-wise, I’d just like to have other forms of revenue in the long-term while I transition.”

With that work ethic, positive attitude and ambitious outlook, Kitt is on her way to capitalizing on a blossoming adult career in the pursuit of global acclaim with non-stop momentum.
