Ed Seeman, Famed Filmmaker From Porn’s Golden Age, Passes Away at 93

OCALA, Fla.— Ed Seeman, who worked as an adult filmmaker during the Golden Age of porn in the ‘70s, has passed away. He was 93.

Born in New York City in 1931, Seeman attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn before landing a job as an animator at Paramount Pictures, where he worked on classic TV shows such as “Popeye the Sailorman” and “Casper, the Friendly Ghost.”

Seeman then put his skills as a cartoonist to work for the military, producing re-enlistment ads for the U.S. Army after serving from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War.

After the war, Seeman returned to New York and produced animated commercials for Flintstones Vitamins and cereal brands such as Trix and Cocoa Puffs. He even won a Clio Award for his commercial for Luden’s cough drops after enlisting Frank Zappa to do the music for $2,000. That spot sparked a long creative relationship between the two artists.

In addition to being a successful ad man, Seeman was an accomplished artist whose oil paintings were exhibited at MoMA in New York. He also won an Emmy for his animation work in the children’s TV show “The Great Space Coaster,” and five of his experimental films (which he made under the pseudonym Eduardo Cemano) are in the U.S. Library of Congress.

In the ‘70s, Seeman became a well-known glamour photographer whose work appeared in classic men’s magazines such as Cheri, Genesis, Oui, Penthouse, and Puritan, the latter of which stood out in the minds of Seeman’s many fans.

“I remember his awesome photo spreads in Puritan Magazine. They were epic,” Golden Age adult film star Annie Sprinkle wrote on Facebook. “He made art til the end.”

Veronica Vera, who worked as an adult star in the ‘80s, also paid tribute to Seeman on Facebook.

“He was a giant of modern erotica who believed in showing us the emotions inherent in orgasm,” wrote Vera.

Seeman has previously been quoted as saying he desired to “become the H.G. Wells of eroticism,” explaining that he was into “the metaphysics of sex.”

“Porn for me was like shooting the other side of the moon. I wanted to show people something they had never seen before,” he said.

In 1989, Seeman moved from New York to South Florida, where he started an animation company that enlisted clients such as the Florida Lottery and the Florida Oceanographic Society.

More recently, Seeman sold t-shirts with his wife, Amy, via their company Mana-T’s, and through his thriving Fractal Legends venture.

Seeman’s daughter, Wendy Schecter, wrote on Facebook that her father’s mobility issues made it difficult for him to create art, and as a result, he lost the will to live.

He passed away at his home on Feb. 4 with Amy at his side. In addition to his wife and daughter, Seeman is survived by his grandson, Doug Yoel.

North Dakota Legislature Backs Off on Device-Based AV

BISMARCK, N.D. — A North Dakota state senator who sponsored a device-based age verification bill that Free Speech Coalition (FSC) endorsed is now seeking to amend the bill to require site-based age verification instead.

The change will make SB 2380 into yet another copycat version of the age verification bills being promoted around the country by religious conservative activists.

As originally introduced, the bill would have required manufacturers of internet-enabled devices and operating systems to determine the age of a device’s primary user and signal websites whether that user is a minor.

At the time, FSC Executive Director Alison Boden praised that version of the bill as a “common-sense solution to age-verification that protects adults and children alike.”

In a statement, FSC noted that device-based age-verification protects consumer privacy and cannot be circumvented using workarounds like VPNs.

Earlier this week, the North Dakota Senate Industry and Business Committee held a hearing during which it heard public testimony for and against the device-based AV bill. Testimony in favor came from a range of groups including the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children and North Dakota Family Alliance Legislative Action, while those in opposition included Net Choice, the BroadBand Association of North Dakota and the App Association.

Carissa Swenson of the BroadBand Association of North Dakota told the committee that “the best thing” would be to require adult sites to implement age verification.

“Because it’s working,” she told the committee. “It’s working in 19 other states. Put the onus on them. They’re the ones who need to make sure that you’re of age in order to view those sites.”

On Wednesday, Republican state Senator Keith Boehm, who sponsored the bill, told the committee that he plans to amend the bill to require site-based age verification instead of device-based AV, citing Utah and Texas as models.

“We received a lot of pushback on the device-based because that technology is not mature yet,” he told the committee.

Noting that site-based AV laws in other states have led to lawsuits, Boehm explained, “The reason we went with the device-based is because that is not in litigation, and we actually had the infamous Free Speech Coalition say that it wasn’t going to get litigated. But it’s a bridge too far at this point.”

Boehm also joined other proponents of the current spate of state AV laws in asserting that the fact that adult sites have blocked access in states with such laws indicates that the laws are effective — a contention predicated on the assumption that the goal is to ban adult content for all, rather than prevent minors from accessing it.

“It’s been effective,” Boehm said. “Wherever ID-based has been introduced, that industry is backing out.”

NYC Adult Stores May Face Enforcement of 2001 Zoning Law

NYC Adult Stores May Face Enforcement of 2001 Zoning Law

NEW YORK — Adult retail stores in New York City are bracing for a potential crisis as an appeals court considers whether to allow enforcement of a 2001 city zoning law aimed at forcing them out of most parts of the city.

The city’s 1995 Zoning Ordinance prohibited adult entertainment businesses in most areas, notably including a swath of midtown Manhattan as part of the effort to “clean up” Times Square and adjacent areas. The law included provisions defining businesses as adult establishments if 40% or more of their area or stock involved sexual content.

A 2001 amendment eliminated that 40% rule, which the city claimed was too easy for businesses to circumvent, and instead took aim at any business that “primarily” markets adult entertainment, from strip clubs to bookstores and video stores.

The law has been held up in litigation for the past two decades as adult businesses challenged its constitutionality, claiming it violates their rights to free speech and equal protection.

Last year, a district court judge ruled that New York would be within its rights to enforce the amendment, forcing even establishments that may have technically fulfilled the 60/40 requirement to move out of the city. The plaintiffs appealed that ruling to the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit.

Courthouse News Service reports that 2nd Circuit Judge Steven Menashi, a Trump appointee, defended the amendment during oral arguments on Wednesday, asserting that the 2001 amendment was needed to stop adult businesses from using the 40% rule to get around the law.

“You know, a strip club that has a billiard room upstairs is still really a strip club,” Menashi told the plaintiffs’ attorneys, who in turn argued that the original studies on how adult businesses impact the neighborhoods around them are now long outdated.

Menashi and the other two judges on the panel, both Biden appointees, did not immediately issue a ruling on Wednesday.
