Casey Calvert, Lumi Ray Co-Star in Holly Randall Productions’ Debut Featurette ‘Hopeless’

Casey Calvert, Lumi Ray Co-Star in Holly Randall Productions' Debut Featurette 'Hopeless'

LOS ANGELES — Holly Randall Productions has debuted its first-ever featurette, “Hopeless,” co-starring Casey Calvert and Lumi Ray.

The title was directed by Jeffrey John Hart, who co-wrote it with editor Kyle McQueen. Amber Guerra co-produced and managed art direction.

Calvert and Ray play best friends whose relationship metamorphoses into something unexpected when one turns to the other for comfort after a painful breakup.

“For our first featurette for Holly Randall Productions, we’ve created an independently produced movie at a very grassroots level,” said Randall of the production, which also features Ivy Wolfe and Codey Steele. “Over the years that we’ve worked together, I saw how talented Jeff was, and I wanted to give him an opportunity to showcase his passion and talent for filmmaking. And I think it really shows in this film.”

Hart enthused, “Most of the projects I’ve been involved in over the past few years, I felt like both my hands were tied behind my back; collaborating with Holly has been amazing. With ‘Hopeless,’ we set out to do whatever we wanted with no restrictions.

“Having Casey and Lumi out front with Holly, Amber and Kyle getting my back, I think we achieved something special,” Hart added. “I got to tell the story the way I wanted to and I didn’t have to answer to anyone. That’s what filmmaking should be.”

Flynt Management Group to Acquire Lovers Brand From Playboy

Flynt Management Group to Acquire Lovers Brand From Playboy

LOS ANGELES — Flynt Management Group has agreed to purchase the Lovers brand, retail stores and ecommerce from Playboy Enterprises, Inc.

The acquisition will include the chain of 40 Lovers stores located in California, Washington, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas along with a nationwide distribution center.

Following completion of the acquisition, Lovers will continue to operate as a stand-alone, complementary brand alongside Hustler Hollywood, which currently operates a distribution center and 59 retail stores throughout the U.S. FMG’s purchase of Lovers will increase the brand’s retail footprint by more than 60 percent across the country and into new geographical regions.

“I simply could not be more excited about this transaction,” said Liz Flynt, chairwoman of FMG. “Purchasing Lovers is the kind of move that my husband Larry liked to make — and I’m so glad that we’re both honoring his legacy and pushing our company forward for the future with this acquisition.

“The synergies and geographical disparities between Lovers and Hustler Hollywood will allow us to further expand in the sexual wellness retail space, which is a dynamic and rapidly growing segment of our industry,” she added. “We’re thrilled to welcome the Lovers chain and its employees into the Flynt Management Group following closing, and we can’t wait to get to work.”

The deal is planned to close on or before Dec. 3.

Thai Police Keep Enforcing Criminalization of Sex Toys in New Raid

BANGKOK — Thai police have arrested two people for running an underground sex toy business, seizing over 18,000 items from their home.

Pleasure products are illegal in Thailand.

Police Colonel Patpawit Wongpinit, a superintendent with the Technology Crime Suppression Division, announced the arrest of 28-year-old Huang Faling, a Chinese national, and his 24-year-old Thai wife, Piyanan. The couple was apprehended in a house they owned in Lat Krabang district, Bangkok, after the execution of a search warrant revealed it was used to warehouse their inventory.

The couple had registered their business as a “massage equipment” retailer.

According to local press reports, during questioning, the couple admitted to having been in the business for three years, generating 10 million baht (around $270,000) in revenue.

In April this year, Thailand’s conservative Democrat Party stated its intention to legalize sex toys in the country, appealing to health benefits beyond sexual pleasure. The party also noted that while sex toys are currently illegal in Thailand, they are being smuggled into the country due to demand, the Bangkok Post reported.

Ratchada Thanadirek, an executive member of the Democrat Party, argued that “legalizing sex toys would help reduce the rate of sex crimes and the number of products illegally smuggled from overseas, which lack quality control and can sometimes cause infections among users,” CNN reported.

U.S. Politicians Also Have Sought to Outlaw Sex Toys

Conservative lawmakers in the U.S. have expressed interest in criminalizing sex toys, or enforcing laws already on the books. Back when he was Texas’ solicitor general, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz infamously wrote a 76-page legal brief defending banning the sale of sex toys.

In the 2007 brief to the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, Cruz and his team argued that “the plaintiffs challenging the law, a group of online retailers and Austin stores that sold sex toys, were not protected under the 14th Amendment’s right to privacy. In fact, he continued, banning obscene devices was in the public interest, and the government should be granted ‘police powers’ for the purposes of ‘discouraging prurient interests in sexual gratification, combating the commercial sale of sex, and protecting minors.’ Furthermore, using ‘obscene devices,’ the state argued, was akin to ‘hiring a willing prostitute or engaging in consensual bigamy,’” Vanity Fair reported in 2016.

Cruz also argued that “there is no substantive-due-process right to stimulate one’s genitals for non-medical purposes unrelated to procreation or outside of an interpersonal relationship.”

Cruz’s argument failed, and that particular Texas anti-sex-toy law was eventually overturned in a narrow 2-1 decision by the judicial panel.

According to legal experts, several state laws criminalizing sex toys are still on the books, including in Texas, Alabama and Mississippi, although enforcement is rare. The Alabama anti-sex-toy law is still enforced, however.
