North Hollywood Strippers Unionize Under Actors’ Equity

North Hollywood Strippers Unionize Under Actors' Equity

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — The dancers at the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar in North Hollywood succeeded last week in their 15-month campaign for better working conditions, becoming the only unionized strippers in the U.S.

The dancers joined the Actors’ Equity Association labor union after the Star Garden owners finally withdrew their opposition and agreed to recognize the unionized dancers, ABC News reported.

After management agreed to a settlement, a formal vote count by the National Labor Relations Board was held last Thursday.

Star Garden dancer Lilith told the Associated Press that the group hopes their efforts “have laid the groundwork for any other stripper in the country who decides that they want to also have a voice in the way their workplace is run.”

Notable precedents for this type of sex worker organizing include the Exotic Dancers Union, formed in the late 90s by dancers at San Francisco’s Lusty Lady, which shuttered a decade ago.

Star Garden, its attorneys told ABC, “is committed to negotiating in good faith with Actors’ Equity a first of its kind collective bargaining agreement which is fair to all parties.”

‘Absolute Warriors’

Star Garden dancer Reagan, one of the organizers, wrote in a statement shared with XBIZ that “if you have been following our journey, then you know this has been a long, exhausting fight, which is why this victory is so sweet. We put everything we have into this campaign, and we were fortunate to have the support and solidarity from the club’s patrons, our allies and friends, the labor movement and our union, Actors’ Equity Association.”

The dancers heralded the development as also a first for Actors’ Equity, a century-old union affiliated with the AFL-CIO labor federation and which also represents Broadway, Walt Disney World and other theatrical performers.

“Strippers are live entertainers,” Actors’ Equity President Kate Shindle stated. “While some elements of their job are unique, they are essentially performance artists, and have a lot in common with other Equity members who dance for a living. Every worker who wants a union deserves a union. The Star Garden dancers have been absolute warriors throughout this long process, and I’m thrilled that we’ve won recognition of their rights to safety and democracy in the workplace and representation at the bargaining table.”

Hamburger Mary’s Sues Ron DeSantis Over Anti-Drag Law

ORLANDO, Fla. — Legendary LGBTQ+-friendly restaurant chain Hamburger Mary’s is suing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over one of his anti-drag laws, alleging his blanket ban against “children attending adult live performances” is affecting its business in Orlando and violating its free speech.

The owners of Hamburger Mary’s filed the federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida on Monday. They are seeking to halt the enforcement of the Republican governor and presumed presidential candidate’s SB 1438.

Last week, DeSantis went on yet another bill-signing spree affecting the lives of LGBTQ+ Floridians, “taking aim at transgender treatments for minors, pronouns in schools, bathroom use and children attending drag shows,” the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The changes “included penalties for venues letting children into adult live performances and potential first-degree misdemeanor charges for violators,” the report continued.

Hamburger Mary’s lawsuit also names Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation Secretary Melanie Griffin as defendant.

Threatening Prosecution Over Free Speech

Hamburger Mary’s restaurants — world-famous for its West Hollywood, California location — have long hosted popular drag performances, include bingo, trivia, comedy, and a “family friendly” Sunday brunch show

After De Santis’ law was signed, the Orlando Sentinel reported, Hamburger Mary’s “told customers that children would not be allowed at any drag shows and it lost 20% of its bookings for Sunday and future events.”

According to the lawsuit, Hamburger Mary’s owners “simply cannot take the chance that their business or liquor licenses would be suspended for hosting a drag show where children attend. In addition, the criminal penalties of the law put individuals at risk of prosecution because of the content of their speech.”

The broad, sweeping nature of the law, and the vagueness regarding what conduct is and is not prohibited, the lawsuit alleges, “will have a chilling effect on the First Amendment rights of the citizens of Florida.”

Doc Johnson Launches Small Hands, Owen Gray Signature Toys at Museum of Sex

Doc Johnson Launches Small Hands, Owen Gray Signature Toys at Museum of Sex

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Doc Johnson and Museum of Sex held a launch party last weekend to introduce the Small Hands and Owen Gray Signature Cocks toys.

The event was hosted by the two noted male performers, whose Signature Cocks were the newest addition to the Museum of Sex Gift Shop. They partied with attendees throughout the night, taking and posting pictures and signing their products.

Doc Johnson Senior Account Manager Kristen Denton said, “This was such a smart and fun way to introduce these Signature Cocks to the Museum of Sex shop. The party was a huge hit, and as Owen Gray and Small Hands are two of the biggest male stars in the industry right now, we know that their products will continue to fly off the shelves.”

A Doc Johnson rep noted that the company pioneered toys molded directly from performers’ bodies — beginning with Jeff Stryker and John Holmes decades ago — and thus the Signature Cocks line fits perfectly in a museum focused on innovation.

Museum of Sex Director of Retail Kit Richardson said Doc Johnson “has always been a leader in the industry and is consistently producing products that are market-changing and resonate with customers. It was a thrill and honor to launch the Signature Cocks of Owen Gray and Small Hands toys here at the Museum of Sex, an institution that values companies that breathe innovation and progress while having a finger on the pulse of our customers’ needs.”

The launch, Richardson added, “was an absolute triumph that brought in fans from all over the city and would not have been successful without the support from Scott Watkins, Kristen Denton, and the Doc Johnson team. I look forward to further collaborating with Doc Johnson and growing together to bring something new and exciting to the industry.”
