Imgur Orders Purge of All ‘Explicit’ Images by May 15

Imgur Orders Purge of All 'Explicit' Images by May 15

SAN FRANCISCO — Image hosting site Imgur has updated its terms of service and warned users to remove any “explicit images” by May 15.

Both “automated detection software” and human moderation will be used to detect the newly forbidden sexual material.

Imgur offered their reasons for the content purge yesterday through a post on the site, explaining that they “will be focused on removing old, unused, and inactive content that is not tied to a user account from our platform as well as nudity, pornography and sexually explicit content.”

The site emphasized their total adult content ban by stressing that “most notably” the purge will focus on what the site considers “explicit/pornographic content.”

As tech news site Ars Technica noted today, Imgur is alleging that “explicit and illegal content have historically posed a risk to Imgur’s community and its business.” The company also claims that the total purge of adult content was mandated to “protect the future of the Imgur community.”

Imgur was launched in 2010 and was acquired by a holding company, MediaLab AI, two years ago. It quickly gained a reputation among Reddit users for a reliable site to upload images that could then be linked from that platform. Imgur “continues to be the main place for NSFW Reddit image uploads due to Reddit not allowing explicit content to be uploaded directly to Reddit,” the Ars Technica report explained, quoting a third-party developer.

Reasons Behind Imgur’s New Sex Censorship Policy

The new policies, according to Imgur, will address the following issues:

  • “Explicit/Pornographic content was previously permitted to be on Imgur, but not when submitted as a comment or as a gallery submission. This caused frustration with users who received content violations for the content they have seen posted elsewhere off-site. Aligning our Terms of Service more closely with our Community Rules should help clearly define what is and isn’t permitted on Imgur.
  • Explicit and illegal content have historically posed a risk to Imgur’s community and its business, disallowing explicit content will allow Imgur to address these risks and protect the future of the Imgur community.
  • Artistic nudity will continue to be permitted, as it was permitted under the Rules previously – however, since we’re calibrating automated detection in these early stages, some content that may have been permitted under ‘artistic exceptions’ previously may not apply here. We will not be issuing any warnings, account suspensions, or bans in relation to these automated flags – but this may impact what is allowed to be submitted or uploaded. Should there be any issues preventing you from uploading content that is falsely flagged as explicit content, we want to hear from you.”

Louisiana House Passes Religious Republican’s New Anti-Porn Law

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana state house almost unanimously passed new legislation on Monday creating more liability for adult websites, which was introduced by the religious Republican lawmaker behind the state’s controversial age verification law.

The house voted 101-1 to pass House Bill 77, which would “let the state attorney general pursue civil penalties against companies that do not comply with a law that requires pornography websites to verify the age of its users,” the Louisiana Illuminator reported.

Only one Democratic representative voted in opposition, Rep. Mandie Landry (D-New Orleans).

HB 77 was introduced by faith-based therapist and local politician Laurie Schlegel (R-Matairie), the anti-porn activist behind Louisiana’s Act 440, the controversial law that took effect Jan. 1 and requires “age verification for any website that contains 33.3% or more pornographic material.”

Schlegel believes that “pornography is destroying our children and they’re getting unlimited access to it on the internet.”

Opposing Schlegel, Rep. Landry pointed out several obvious problems with Schlegel’s proposal, including the ease with which minors could bypass any age verification system by simply using VPN technology.

Landry also raised questions about how Schelgel’s “33.3% of material harmful to minors” would be calculated, the Illuminator reported.

“Taken to an absurd level, if 80% of the page is ‘Blue’s Clues’ and 20% is pornography, is that OK?” Landry wondered.

Rep. Matthew Willard (D-New Orleans) also voiced his concern regarding “unintended consequences with that one-third criteria.

“I want to know how that’s determined,” Willard asked. “Does the [attorney general] make that determination? Is there objective criteria that is based upon?”

HB 77 calls for “investigation and pursuit of actions for commercial entities that knowingly and intentionally publish or distribute material harmful to minors and that fail to perform reasonable age verification.”

Republicans throughout the country are currently seeking to outlaw all adult content by overturning the 1973 “Miller Test” differentiating First Amendment-protected sexual material from illegal “obscene” material produced to appeal to “a prurient interest.”

As XBIZ reported, to define “material harmful to minors,” Schlegel created her own revised version of the Miller Test for HB 77, expanding a plain reference to “sexual conduct” into her own feverish fantasy of what such content might entail.

For the religious therapist and Republican politician, “sexual conduct” apparently involves “prurient interest in nudity, sex, or excretion” and “an actual or simulated sexual act or sexual contact, actual or simulated normal or perverted sexual acts, or lewd exhibition of the genitals.”
