Utah Senator, Mormon Activist Single Out Adult Sites With ‘PROTECT Act’

WASHINGTON — Utah Senator Mike Lee (R) and Mormon activist Dawn Hawkins, CEO of religiously motivated anti-porn lobby NCOSE, are promoting the PROTECT Act, a proposed federal bill that would make adult websites liable for third-party content.

Sen. Lee introduced the PROTECT Act last week. The bill would require “pornography sites to verify the age of all participants in pornographic images; require sites to obtain verified consent forms from individuals uploading content and those appearing in uploaded content; and mandate that websites quickly remove images upon receiving notice they uploaded without consent.”

The law does not define “pornography site.” The definition of pornography is frequently contested, and groups like NCOSE have contended that mainstream publications Sport Illustrated and Cosmopolitan constitute “pornography.”

Sen. Lee’s announcement of the bill last week also implicitly conflated legal “pornography” — however defined — with illegal CSAM and even actual rape, by stating that the proposal “comes as Utah law enforcement announced a 600% increase in cases involving child pornography and sexual contact with minors since 2020” and citing statistics from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This was juxtaposed with an endorsement from the completely unrelated National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), led by Mormon activist and former Republican staffer Dawn Hawkins, also from Utah.

Earlier this year, Hawkins recounted to Utah’s Deseret News that “after returning from her church mission, she moved straight to Washington, D.C., and emailed Patrick Treuman, the former chief at the U.S. Department of Justice of the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section under former presidents Reagan and Bush. She asked if there was a project on which she could volunteer.”

“I cared about the law and advocacy side of things,” Hawkins told Deseret News. “I thought, we have to stop this problem and pull back how normalized exploitation has become.”

Hawkins also took credit for the secular rebranding of NCOSE, the religiously inspired pro-censorship group originally known as Morality in Media.

Adult sites enjoy the same free speech and Section 230 protections as other platforms, but Sen. Lee’s bill and announcement seem geared towards changing that.

“Pornography sites need to do more to prevent the exploitation that is occurring on their platforms and allow individuals to remove images shared without their consent,” Lee declared. “The PROTECT Act is a step in that direction.”

The bill is also endorsed by controversial conservative activist Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, as well as celebrities like comedian Witney Cummings and former athlete, actor, motivational speaker and anti-porn activist Terry Crews.

Rialto Report Pays Tribute to the Late Kitten Natividad

LOS ANGELES — Adult industry history site the Rialto Report published a podcast last week including the last interview with actress, dancer, model and performer Kitten Natividad, who passed away in Los Angeles on Sept. 24 at age 74.

According to the Rialto Report, the cause of death was “kidney failure after suffering from cancer.”

The Rialto Report’s Ashley West penned a moving tribute to Natividad, a legendary Los Angeles dancer originally from Mexico, who gained worldwide fame in mainstream erotic auteur Russ Meyer’s “Up!” (1976) and “Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens” (1979).

Natividad, West wrote, “was a genuine cult pop culture figure who, over the last six decades, had a wild life and a storied career: she started out as a cook and maid … was a go-go dancer on the Sunset Strip, and a beauty queen in the early 1970s when she was twice elected Miss Nude Universe.”

Other mainstream appearances by the buxom Natividad include “Lady in Red,” “Another 48 Hours” and “Airplane!”

In recent years Natividad was “a legendary in-demand burlesque dancer appearing in sold-out shows all over the world. But perhaps The Rialto Report remembers her most fondly for her appearances in two of Russ Meyer’s later films … for many years she and Russ were the first couple of sexploitation movies, partners on set as well as in life — quite a feat given Russ was not an easy man to live with.”

After they split, Natividad “made a series of hard-core sex films before turning her life around and re-inventing herself as a grand dame of bawdy, raunchy, good clean fun,” West noted.

Natividad’s IAFD entry lists 61 performer credits, starting in 1976 and continuing through the mid 1990s, including iconic “Golden Age of VHS”-era titles like “Thanks for the Mammories.”

In his Rialto Report tribute, West shared that “in person, Kitten was a force of nature, and a person we never grew tired of. She had a gentle, angelic smile, but don’t be fooled: she was a feisty, tough, old-fashioned dame. In truth, she ran circles around us: we emerged from every conversation with her feeling like we had been mauled by a bear, played with like a rag doll, and made love to by a goddess.”

“She may have been named Kitten, but she was more like a hungry tiger.”

Ron Jeremy Trial Postponed Again, Until 2023

Ron Jeremy Trial Postponed Again, Until 2023

LOS ANGELES — The Ron Jeremy trial has been postponed until Jan. 17, 2023.

The news was confirmed to XBIZ this afternoon by a Los Angeles County district attorney’s office spokesperson.

The DA’s office did not respond to a question about whether a psychiatric expert for the prosecution has already issued a report on whether or not Jeremy is competent to stand trial in Los Angeles for multiple sexual assaults and rapes.

As XBIZ reported, a psychiatric expert for the defense issued a report in late July asserting that Jeremy is not competent to stand trial. The report was presented in court July 27 and the next hearing was set for today.

Jeremy’s attorney, Stuart Goldfarb, did not reply to a request for comment on today’s developments.

The criminal case has been at a standstill since presiding Judge George Lomeli’s March 17 decision to suspend proceedings after he received reports from Goldfarb and the bailiff that the defendant was “incoherent” and could not be transported to court.

Judge Lomeli then referred the case to a mental health courthouse for a decision on Jeremy’s ability to stand trial. The judge recommended that psychiatrists on each side conduct evaluations to determine competency.

Jeremy is currently awaiting trial in Los Angeles, where he has remained in jail since his arrest in June 2020.

After an August 2021 grand jury indictment was returned, Jeremy pled not guilty to 12 counts of forcible rape, seven counts of forcible oral copulation, six counts of sexual battery by restraint, four counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object, two counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious or asleep person and one count each of lewd act upon a child under the age of 14 or 15, sodomy by use of force and assault with intent to commit rape.

Last year, XBIZ published a detailed account of the 21 accusations that form the Los Angeles County district attorney’s case against Jeremy. It remains the only comprehensive journalistic account of the testimonies given before the grand jury in August 2021.
