Online Sexual Health Care Platform ‘Píque’ Launches

LOS ANGELES — The new online platform Píque has launched, offering sexual health solutions, sex therapy and prescriptions like vaginal estrogen.

Píque, a rep noted, was “founded on the belief that all women deserve great sex as an integral part of living a healthy, fulfilling life.”

The platform will take an integrated approach that offers medical expertise combined with a focus on mental, physical, hormonal and social factors to offer patients holistic, personalized care, the rep added.

“While there are many solutions to treat erectile dysfunction, and the market is projected to reach almost $5 billion by 2026, there are few medical equivalents for women and the women’s reproductive and sexual health market remains in its infancy,” the rep continued. “Oftentimes sexual health discourse is limited to toys, lubes and lingerie, causing women to feel alone in their struggles, insecure and unsure of where they can obtain answers to their sexual health issues.”

Billed as a “digital health clinic,” Píque aims “to provide a suite of solutions for every chapter of a woman’s sexual journey, starting with menopause, and help address concerns from painful sex, vaginal dryness and low libido, to helping women build confidence, maintain strong intimate relationships, overcome sexual trauma and beyond.”

Founder and CEO Leslie Busick explained that Píque is “empowering women to celebrate their desires and embrace them as a fundamental pillar for a happy, healthy life.”

“By providing prescriptions, mental health support, resources and more, we can support women as they progress in their sexual health journey so they can build a deeper relationship not only with their partners, but with themselves,” she said.

Busick hopes the brand will help to destigmatize the sexual health category and give women the power to take control of their health, pleasure and well-being.

New patients, the rep noted, “begin their Píque journey with a complimentary introductory session with a nurse practitioner who specializes in sexual health and creates a custom care plan that may include different types of vaginal estrogen, sex and relationship counseling services, suggested lifestyle changes and recommended resources from Píque’s library. Patients are able to track their progress with the Female Sexual Function Index, a standardized sexual health quiz to measure sexual function in women.”

VC firm Maveron recently led a recent $4-million seed round for Píque. Maveron partner Anarghya Vardhana said the firm is thrilled to back the Píque team “as they take on a huge category of women’s sexual health.”

“The need to support women throughout their reproductive and sexual journey, including during menopause, is more pressing than ever before,” Vardhana noted. “A full-stack solution that combines clinical-level care with mental health and the convenience of a direct-to-consumer brand is exactly what we were looking for in the space, and is precisely Píque’s approach. Every woman entering menopause should feel empowered and supported; we are excited to support Píque as they go after this audacious and important opportunity.”

Píque’s clinical care team is led by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ashley Winter, a Weill Cornell-trained board-certified urologist who specializes in sexual medicine.

Píque is “reimagining women’s health care at scale, spearheading a future where women can get the personalized, approachable and effective care they need,” Winter shared. “I am thrilled to partner with Leslie to bring light to this underserved subject matter and use Píque’s platform to shift the narrative around women’s sexual health to reach and serve more women.”

Spain’s Adult Creators Issue Manifesto Against Censorship Proposal

Spain's Adult Creators Issue Manifesto Against Censorship Proposal

BARCELONA — A group of leading Spanish and Spain-based independent adult content producers has released a manifesto opposing the total censorship of adult content proposed by the governing PSOE as part of its new anti-sex-work legislation.

Under the heading “Independent adult film producers unite to defend sex workers’ right to consent in response to the new Spanish ‘Solo Sí Es Sí’ Law,” creators Paulita Pappel, Erika Lust, Noel Alejandro and Lemon, and companies Lust Cinema, XConfessions, Else Cinema, Lustery, HardWerk and SexSchoolHub criticized the proposed new law.

“According to PSOE,” the manifesto declares, “Article 187 of the Penal Code is incomplete because it only punishes prostitution that is ‘exploitative,’ while it should ‘punish prostitution widely’; that is, ‘any form of obtaining profit from the prostitution of others,’ no matter if the practice is carried out under exploitation (banned under current law) or with explicit consent from all parties involved, and following ethical production practices.”

The proposed law, the statement continues, “only reinforces the stigma against sex work and the porn industry, demonizing prostitution and pornography as among the main causes of violence against women, and condemning sex workers to more precariousness, secrecy and violence.”

The manifesto co-signers note that “the sex and porn industry is much more complex than this” and that “Much of porn is built from the pillars of consent and respect for the boundaries and interests and desires of all involved.”

The manifesto concludes with a call for addressing some of the social issues underlying political attacks on sex work and adult entertainment: “We firmly believe that we must fight for the development of porn literacy skills, and thus ensure that the sexual education that young people receive is realistic, healthy and enriching for their lives.”

9th Circuit Sets New Date for Backpage.com Appeal

9th Circuit Sets New Date for Backpage.com Appeal

SAN FRANCISCO — The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals this week scheduled for September 2 oral arguments regarding a lower court’s refusal to dismiss the Backpage.com case, following the notorious 2021 mistrial declared by an Arizona judge.

Oral arguments will be presented a year after controversial Judge Susan Brnovich — wife of Arizona Attorney General Mike Brnovich, who is currently campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat — declared a mistrial in the case against former Backpage owners Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. The mistrial ruling came after prosecutors repeatedly ignored Judge Brnovich’s instructions not to attempt to prejudice the jury by bringing up unrelated and inflammatory “child sex trafficking” insinuations.

“The trial judge declared a mistrial in September 2021 due to prosecutorial misconduct,” Phoenix reporter Stephen Lemons told XBIZ. Lemons has been covering the case for years, for the Lacey-Larkin online publication Front Page Confidential. “The defense moved for dismissal, arguing that a new trial would violate the Fifth Amendment’s bar on trying someone twice for the same crime.”

Lemons explained that a new judge “denied that motion without holding an evidentiary hearing. The defense has appealed to the Ninth Circuit. The matter is fully briefed, and the court has tentatively scheduled oral arguments for Sept. 2 in San Francisco.”

According to Lemons, “the government knows that the speech that appeared on Backpage was legal and protected by the First Amendment. One of its own witnesses said so at trial. It’s time for this unhinged vendetta to end.”

Lemons’ recent Front Page Confidential report on the new date for oral arguments described the upcoming hearing as allowing each side 15 minutes before a panel of three judges.

“A notice on the federal docket states that the panel could still decide to forgo oral arguments and rule from the briefs in the case,” the report noted.

Backpage was shuttered and seized by federal authorities in 2018, days before President Trump signed FOSTA into law. The government accused Lacey, Larkin and others of a number of alleged crimes related to their ownership of the popular adult-oriented classifieds website. The case was subsequently used by several political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris, as an example of the need for the FOSTA Section 230 exception.

Federal prosecutors accused the company of “participation in a conspiracy to facilitate and promote prostitution,” and also of money laundering, human trafficking and other charges, which were strongly disputed by the defense.
