Lexi Luna, Alex Coal Star in Delphine's 'Girl Next Door'

LOS ANGELES — Lexi Luna stars opposite Alex Coal in the latest release from Delphine Films, “Girl Next Door.”

Directed by Wesley Pipes, Luna plays Finley, “who has just moved to a new home after her divorce,” said a rep. “She notices from the get-go that the last owners left a lot of things behind. Every day she starts to hear weird noises and sounds thru the walls. One day, one of her neighbors, Mildred, played by Alex Coal, comes to visit. No one knows that Mildred is not just a neighbor, but she has a secret that won’t be revealed till the end.”

Pipes enthused about his cast.

“Working with Lexi and Alex on a horror theme shoot was quite different,” he said. “The two were so pleasant and professional to work with, even though we were shooting late into the night to set the mood. While it is my first time directing in this world, they made it a stress-free environment to explore all my ideas.”

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft Seeks to Redefine ‘Smut’

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft this week attempted to clarify his proposed ban on funding for what he called “prurient” library books, explaining that he meant “smut.”

Ashcroft — a Republican whose father John Ashcroft served as attorney general under President George W. Bush, and a member of influential conservative legal organization the Federalist Society — has been vague about what standards he intends to apply in determining whether books are “prurient,” a concept central to the legal differentiation between obscenity and free speech protected under the First Amendment.

The Missouri Library Association said in a statement that it considers Ashcroft’s proposed rule “an infringement on the professional judgment of librarians, and an effort to further stoke division in the communities that libraries serve,” the St. Louis Business Journal reported.

When pressed for details, Ashcroft admitted that he does not currently have a list of “prurient” books, which he referred to as “smut.” However, he claimed to have seen “books written for ‘tweeners’ displayed in libraries near a computer intended to be used by young children,” according to the report. Neither “tweener” nor “smut” are legally recognized categories of persons or content.

Redefining ‘Prurient’ to Censor All Adult Content

Ashcroft’s proposed rule states that “no funds received shall be used to purchase or acquire materials in any form that appeal to the prurient interest of any minor.”

This would essentially constitute a redefinition of the term “prurient,” which bears a very specific legal meaning.

Industry attorney Lawrence Walters, of Walters Law Group, explained to XBIZ in 2020 that the word “prurient” is defined in the law as “a shameful or morbid interest in sexuality.” Walters pointed out that obviously, adult businesses take the position that their content “does not involve a shameful or morbid interest in human sexuality, but a healthy one.”

The 1973 Miller Test in the Crosshairs of Republicans

The Latin verb “pruire” literally means “to itch.” According to etymological sources, in the mid 1600s the term “prurient” poetically shifted meaning in English from “itching” to “having an itching desire.” It is only a century later, in the 1750s, that the word gained the puritanical connotation of “lascivious and lewd.”

In “Prurient Interests,” a 2002 column on NPR’s Fresh Air program, UC Berkeley information studies scholar Geoffrey Nunberg pointed out the difficulty of building law around obsolete words that few people can define properly.

The Miller test, developed in the 1973 case Miller v. California, is used by courts all the way up to the United States Supreme Court for determining whether speech or expression can be labeled “obscene” and therefore not protected under the First Amendment.

By devising the Miller test, Nunberg explained, the Nixon-era Supreme Court set the standard for judging obscenity as: “Whether, to the average person, applying contemporary community standards, the dominant theme of the material … appeals to prurient interest.”

That formula, Nunberg noted, “has been widely used ever since then.”

Last week, Utah Rep. Ken Ivory (R-West Jordan) demanded a total reversal of the last 50 years of legal and judicial practice, dismissing the Miller test, which has been the nation’s legal standard for a half century, as merely the opinion of a few Supreme Court justices at the time.

A Republican Dynasty of Midwestern ‘Anti-Smut’ Fighters

“In some cases, you have to look at a book to determine” whether it is prurient, Ashcroft declared, “and in some cases, you don’t have to look at it very long.”

Ashcroft’s assertion seems to harken back to the pre-Miller “I know it when I see it” standard for defining obscenity, the vagueness of which ultimately led to the Miller test.

Ashcroft is expected to run for Missouri governor in 2024. His father, John Ashcroft, is enshrined in free speech legal history as the losing party of the “Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition” Supreme Court decision, which declared a 1996 censorship law that banned all porn in the name of fighting child pornography to be unconstitutional and overbroad.

The elder Ashcroft’s track record as an anti-sex crusading included a notorious 2002 incident, when he ordered his department to spend $8,000 on blue drapes to hide two giant, aluminum art deco statues of partially nude women in the Great Hall of the Department of Justice, “because he didn’t like being photographed in front of them,” according to CBS and ABC News.

French Minister Proposes Requiring Credit or Debit Card for Porn Access

French Minister Proposes Requiring Credit or Debit Card for Porn Access

PARIS — French Secretary of State for Childhood Charlotte Caubel has begun advocating for a mandatory age verification system under which access to pornographic websites would be granted exclusively to credit or debit card holders.

Caubel told the nation’s National Assembly on Tuesday that her solution is a “pragmatic” approach that would “filter” pornographic websites. It would be up the French government to determine what sites qualify as pornographic, and it is unclear if Caubel’s proposal would prevent anyone without a debit card from accessing mainstream platforms such as Twitter and Reddit, which tolerate adult content.

In her remarks, Caubel used the term “carte bleue,” which generically refers to both credit and debit cards.

Caubel vowed to push seriously for implementing some form of age verification, but was vague on specifics, telling the lawmakers that her payment card plan would involve charging “zero or one Euro” to allow access to pornographic sites.

“This would already be a filter,” Caubel said. “We have been opposed by saying that this would not be a perfect filter, but if we can already protect 30 or 40% [of minors], let’s be pragmatic. My child, when he uses his carte bleue, I get an alert. I can see if it’s being used on YouPorn or on McDonalds.”

Raising her voice indignantly, Caubel alleged that France “is the fourth country in the world in the production of child pornography. Until when do we have to wait to open our eyes? It destroys our children from within.”

“Let’s stop using tweezers — yes, it destroys our children from the inside. And it prevents breaking the chain of sexual violence that we continue to feed,” Caubel continued, conflating CSAM with legal adult material and echoing a sensationalistic report about “the infernal porn industry” produced by a French Senate committee and SWERF organizations last month.

“There is an opposition today between the freedom to go to adult porn sites and the trauma created for our children,” Caubel continued. “This is a matter of values. Let’s consider them together and see which ones we defend.”

Snapchat Appoints Anti-Porn NCOSE Activist to Safety Board

Snapchat Appoints Anti-Porn NCOSE Activist to Safety Board

WASHINGTON — Religiously motivated anti-porn and anti-sex-work group NCOSE — formerly Morality in Media — announced today that one of its lead staffers has been appointed to the safety board of Snap, the company behind social media platform Snapchat.

“We’re honored that Lina Nealon, director of corporate and strategic initiatives at NCOSE, was selected to join Snap’s new Safety Advisory Board,” the well-funded, pro-censorship organization tweeted today. “The Board works to combat online safety risks — including child sexual exploitation — and make Snapchat safer for all users.”

According to NCOSE’s website, Nealon’s principal duty at the organization is to “spearhead NCOSE’s campaigns to hold corporations accountable for profiting from sexual exploitation.”

NCOSE’s main such campaign is a yearly public shaming stunt called the “Dirty Dozen,” where the organization lists 12 corporations, or occasionally entire states, that it alleges are contributors to sexual exploitation, and encourages its followers to target those entities with their activism.

In 2016, NCOSE accused Snapchat of leaving young women “vulnerable to exploitation, sextortion and cyber sexual-assault,” and labeled the platform “ripe for sexploitation.”

NCOSE has extolled Nealon for her crusade to abolish sex work, crediting her with designing and leading “the first national program combatting the demand for paid sex that drives the global sex industry.”

The new Snapchat security board member’s stated mission has been to “stop sex buyers, disrupt commercial sex markets, and transform cultural norms around buying sex.”

Since its beginnings in 1961, NCOSE has included the entire adult industry as the chief “commercial sex market” it seeks to eradicate.
