LOS ANGELES — HoneyHouse PR has nabbed the 2024 Urban X Award nomination for Most Popular Public Relations Company.

“I am honored to be nominated this year,” said HoneyHouse PR owner Michael Whiteacre. “The job of PR and communications is all about the client; I tell each one, at the outset, that they are the voice and HoneyHouse is the microphone. This is a behind-the-scenes job, done best, in my opinion, when the strategist is more-or-less invisible. Thus, campaigning for votes is a contradiction to me. I don’t do it, and I prefer my work at HoneyHouse to speak for itself.

LA CROSSE, Wis. — University of Wisconsin-La Crosse held a hearing to decide the fate of a veteran University of Wisconsin professor, who was removed from his post as chancellor last year due to unremorsefully creating and appearing in adult content.

As XBIZ reported, professor of communications Joe Gow was fired as chancellor on the recommendation of Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman, who called the professor’s actions — including posting adult videos with his wife on their OnlyFans account — “abhorrent.”

Rothman told Gow in December that he was also initiating a process to challenge his tenured faculty position in communication studies.

“To retain my tenure, I need to defend myself before a faculty tribunal,” Gow wrote in a recent piece about his situation for the Chronicle of Higher Education. “I look forward to doing so.”

The tribunal held a meeting last week, when Wade Harrison, senior legal counsel for the Universities of Wisconsin, “said the school has cause to remove former Chancellor Joe Gow from his faculty position, including unethical behavior and insubordination,” Wisconsin Public Radio reported.

Harrison laid out the case for removing Gow in front of the faculty senate committee during the first day of the two-day hearing process.

Gow delivered an opening statement in his own defense, calling the administration’s charges “irrelevant, inconsequential, misleading, distorted and downright false.”

“Tenure is based on the quality of one’s teaching, research and service,” Gow noted. “These bogus charges have nothing to do with that and they raise the question: do faculty have the right to engage in free speech in their personal lives, particularly on contemporary social media?”

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia — Malaysia’s Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching told Parliament that the country’s Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had worked with X to remove pornographic content from the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Teo told the legislators that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked 549 pornographic websites and 69 full-service-sex-work-related websites since Jan. 1, Singapore’s The Star newspaper reported.

Teo added that MCMC’s pressure on various social media companies, including X and Telegram, had resulted in the removal of “308 incidents of pornographic content and 838 cases of prostitution-related content” on the platforms.

“The Ministry of Communications through the MCMC assists by providing technical support to relevant authorities, including the removal of social media content, blocking of websites, and supplying information and digital forensic analysis to expedite investigations,” Teo added. “Aside from that, MCMC takes action under the Communications and Multimedia Act Malaysia 1998 if uploaded content is deemed obscene, offensive, false, threatening, or malicious.”

Teo confirmed the Malaysian government continues strengthening its ties with internet companies to implement “harmful content monitoring and control initiatives on social media platforms.”

As XBIZ reported, under the ownership of Elon Musk, X has pivoted to a non-absolutist approach to free speech. The entrepreneur has stated that X would “respect the speech laws of each country” so that the platform he purchased in October 2022 will not become “a free-for-all hellscape.”
