Religiously Motivated Anti-Porn Groups Sign Letter Endorsing KOSA

WASHINGTON — Several major religiously inspired anti-porn lobbies, including NCOSE, have endorsed a letter to the U.S. Senate supporting the controversial Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), a bill that digital rights and free speech advocates have warned will limit online free speech.

The letter was initially obtained by NBC News, the first outlet to mention a summary of its contents and the number — though not the full identities — of the signatory organizations. Their report by tech reporter Kat Tenbarge, who notes that “more than 200 organizations” sent the letter Wednesday “urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to schedule a vote on the Kids Online Safety Act first thing in January when Congress reconvenes.”

Tenbarge’s report also quotes Sacha Haworth, executive director of the Tech Oversight Project, one of the endorsing organizations behind the letter. XBIZ contacted Haworth, who offered a link to the full text of the letter and the complete list of the signatory organizations.

The complete list reveals that the letter was signed by NCOSE, formerly known as Morality in Media, along with several other religiously motivated pro-censorship groups that have sought to eradicate all adult content. These include the Parents Television and Media Council and Citizens for Decency, a veteran pro-censorship lobby whose motto is “Stand Against Pornography.”

Besides these venerable anti-porn crusading organizations, the letter was also endorsed by less prominent but active religious conservative groups devoted to making porn illegal again, such as Parents Who Fight and Enough Is Enough.

The Usual Network of Anti-Porn Crusading Groups

These less well-known organizations tend to share two things: generic sounding names and very vocal anti-porn agendas.

Parents Who Fight, which aligns itself with fellow crusading organizations Exodus Cry and Utah-based Fight the New Drug, actively promotes anti-porn propaganda material like the videos produced by Exodus Cry’s Benjamin Nolot.

Enough Is Enough, founded in 1992, became one of the first organizations to specifically target adult content online. The group’s efforts helped pave the way for the Clinton-era Communications Decency Act, which was almost entirely struck by the courts as unconstitutionally impinging upon freedom of speech.

Current Enough Is Enough director Donna Rice Hughes is a religious activist who in 2014 published a sensationalistic academic article in the Christian Apologetics Journal, titled “The Internet Pornography Pandemic: The Largest Unregulated Social Experiment in Human History.”

KOSA and Sex Worker Censorship

The Tech Oversight Project’s Sasha Haworth told NBC News, “The 200-plus organizations in support of KOSA are unanimous in our belief that KOSA would not be used to censor sex workers, LGBTQ kids, the trans community or anyone.”

Despite Haworth’s assurance, some of the endorsing groups have repeatedly stated that there is no such thing as consensual sex work, which they exclusively link with trafficking and abuse, while others have actively campaigned against LGBTQ+ rights.

As Tenbarge points out, in September, one of KOSA’s main proponents, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn) “caused alarm among some transgender advocates when she said ‘protecting minor children from the transgender in this culture’ should be a top priority for lawmakers in a video in which she also praised KOSA.”

Blackburn’s statements about how conservative DAs might apply KOSA in the future to chill free speech around sexual issues and LGBTQ+ education seem much more in line with the activism track record of NCOSE, Citizens for Decency and the other endorsing groups than with Haworth’s claim about her co-signatories’ intentions.

New Mexico AG: Pornhub, OnlyFans Safer Than Facebook, Instagram

New Mexico AG: Pornhub, OnlyFans Safer Than Facebook, Instagram

SANTA FE — The office of New Mexico’s Attorney General Raúl Torrez admitted in a statement announcing the state’s lawsuit against Meta that some instances of CSAM are ten times “more prevalent” on Facebook and Instagram than on Pornhub and OnlyFans.

New Mexico has sued Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, “alleging that the company’s platforms enabled child sexual abuse material to be distributed, and failed to identify alleged predator networks,” CNBC reported.

Torrez filed the lawsuit after an undercover investigation, which New Mexico alleges “revealed myriad instances of sexually explicit content being served to minors, child sexual coercion, or the sale of CSAM.”

The New Mexico AG office said through a statement that Zuckerberg and other Meta executives “are aware of the serious harm their products can pose to young users, and yet they have failed to make sufficient changes to their platforms that would prevent the sexual exploitation of children. Despite repeated assurances to Congress and the public that they can be trusted to police themselves, it is clear that Meta’s executives continue to prioritize engagement and ad revenue over the safety of the most vulnerable members of our society.”

“The Office’s investigators found that certain child exploitative content is over ten times more prevalent on Facebook and Instagram than it is on Pornhub and OnlyFans,” the AG office statement noted.

Fiji Government to Launch Task Force to Reduce Porn Viewership

SUVA, Fiji — Fiji’s government has decided to take action after a political and media campaign that sensationalized the issue of access to adult material in the island nation, and has announced a forthcoming “task force” aiming to reduce porn viewership among its citizens.

“Fiji has one of the highest rates of internet use in the Pacific and this digital revolution is causing a problem for its government — unfettered access to porn,” reported Australia’s The ABC network, which covers regional issues in the South Pacific.

The government effort is being spearheaded by Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications Manoa Kamikamica.

Although he warned that the campaign will spark “privacy, freedom of expression, security, censorship, technological and individual liberty considerations,” Kamikamica also expressed his belief that there is a “complex relationship” between pornography and “an increase in sexual-related crimes.” The ABC reported. Such supposed connection — a controversial, tendentious theory which does not account for the difference between correlation and causation — is also currently being advanced by anti-porn crusaders in politics and the media in Italy and Spain.

Kamikamica also claims to have data from an unnamed internet service provider supposedly showing the sensationally sounding statistic that “626.13 terabytes of internet traffic was used to view porn in Fiji last quarter.”

“To put this into context, 626 terabytes of data is approximately equal to the amount of data stored in 100 million books,” Kamikamica explained, without distinguishing between downloading, uploading and streaming, or explaining how “porn” was defined to reach such a number.

Kamikamica also alleged Fiji “ranked in the top 10 countries of the provider’s network for internet traffic to porn websites.”

The data repeats a claim made three years ago, during the COVID pandemic, by Fiji’s Minister for Women Children and Poverty Lynda Tabuya who also publicized supposed Google Trends figures ranking the country in the top 10 of locations searching for “porn” and “pornography”.

The campaign is also being promoted by the religiously inspired the Free Fiji from Porn organization, mostly active in churches and on Facebook. The group’s mission is “speaking openly and honestly about pornography addiction,” a perceived neurological ailment that has not be corroborated by scientists beyond the standard category of compulsion.

Kamikamica obtained bipartisan support for creating his government task force which aims to “reduce high volumes of porn-related internet traffic” — which he termed “a social ill” — and will focus “on education around consent and healthy relationships.”

The task force will launch in early 2024.
